I have an MR-1 in the sump of my 90 gallon with ozone being injected at 50%. These skimmers are very sensitive to the simplest changes within the tank and are extremely efficient. The foam will dissipate during initial feeding and even placing your hand in the tank.
Andy at MRC suggests filling the skimmer 4" below the first riser (first black plate just above the skimmer box) using the large red valve. Since I am dosing ozone, I have the bubble injector turned way down to avoid the skimmer from suddenly overflowing. If you aren't using ozone I suggest adjusting the air injector around the mid-point.
The foam will begin to build and rise up through the skimmers neck into the collection cup. Takes a little trial and error. Andy is extremely helpful if you need any other tips. Just email or call him directly.
