Hi, my question is does anyone run a tank with no heater. I have heard people have had success with using no heater at all and was wondering if anyone can tell me their experiences with no heaters in tank.

I live in Boston, MA area, so wondering if there is anyone is the north east who has been able to run a system without a heater

I've read a few threads about this, and the common answers is that the tank water temp., 99 times out of 100 will be 4 to 5 degrees lower than the house temp. So that translates in the winter keeping the home temp around 83 to 85. To me that would create one hell of a heating bill, So the cost off set doesn't work out.

Interesting, some say the heat fluctuations may not be good for our animals, some corals, fish, and inverts live in extremely shallow water and highs and lows in tides definitely swing the temp quite a lot. I suppose turn down your heater if its adjustable, and see what happens overtime.

My house in south florida uses central air all the time other than a few days now and then when its cool and dry enough. My ac has the house 73-76 degrees. I could probably turn my heater to 72 as and save some power, but i think 72-73 is on the lowest end of whats normal for a reef tank?

I'm not sure this is possible without a bad thermometer. Unless you have a fan blowing over the water to cool it the tank then the water should be the same temp as the house. In fact it's likely to be a bit warmer given the added heat from pumps and lights and such.

As far as going without a heater, as long as your house temp is reasonable stable from day to night (and to some extent from winter to summer, although a small gradual swing is ok there) then I think you would be ok.

Looks like it might be tough to have such steady temps in New England

I think this is the key. Often stability is better than having "perfect" numbers. If you can keep the temp stable without a heater, even if it's a degree or two lower than ideal then I think you should be fine. If the temp drops 5 or 6 degrees overnight every night then you may have issues.

No heater here in Bradenton Florida, I keep the thermostat at 77 degrees, the pumps, led lights, and powerheads keep the tank temp about 81. I don't know how the tank temp would ever be cooler than house temp?

No heater here in San Antonio, TX. We keep the house around 74 in the winter and 76 in the summer. It's one less piece of equipment to hide or worry about.
