I was lucky enough to acquire a healthy Stichodactyla gigantea carpet anemone a couple weeks ago from Aqualife and it is doing quite well so far. Have any of you seen any of them at our other LFS stores? It is often pointless to call them because they usually don't know how to differentiate S. gigantea from S. haddoni and call both of them carpets.

i've never seen any gigantea around this area... and good haddonis are even hard to find here. good find... i would love to see some pics. what color is it?

Umm... I saw a blue carpet at JoJo's Aquarium today. Also a lime greenish one there too. I dont know the difference between haddoni's and gigantea's though... Most likely carpets?

yes, jo jo's had a couple nice specimens. i don't know the different types either, but judging by this picture (which i did a google image search), i'd say the lime green carpet could be what you are looking for:

Brooke,

Here is a pic of the gigantea carpet I found. This was when it was a couple days old, I have had it a couple weeks now it is darkening up some and seems to be doing well so far:

The easiest way to differentiate S. gigantea from S. haddoni is to look at the column. Gigantea typically will have purple/blue verrucae (i.e. spots) on its column while haddoni will have an all white or creamish colored column with no spots. Also, gigantea has longer tentacles when expanded. Another clue is that haddoni will typically have a reddish colored mouth, but not always.

Yes, indeed, a good carpet is hard to find!

Well again...I dont know the difference either...But every time I've visited CRS -Coral Reef Shop- they have had exceptionally colored carpets...I was there last week exchanging bulk heads and they had aprox. 3-5 that I can remember..all either lime green or Pinkish/red...Thought that this might help~!
