I am back from school, and my test kits yield surprising, yet good results.

Ammonia: 0ppm
Nitrite: 0ppm
Nitrate: 15-20ppm
pH: 8.2

Those look pretty good to me, although mysterious, so I'm going to wait at least another week before I even think about doing anything.

Hey there, your system is starting to come together. I hope that aiptasia doesn't come back--be thankful you only have one! LOL. I'm enjoying your progress.

Thanks Gawain :)

I forgot to add this...last night, I forgot to put the tests down the drain, and I looked at them. It showed ammonia was .5! Is this normal for leaving test kits out? The test tube wasn't open or anything...

Hmmm...I don't know tsquad....i wouldn't be worried...I'd just go with the results after the appropriate time period.

Tested the ammonia, since that was the only troublesome test, and it says 0ppm again. Asked my mom and she says it says 0ppm too, so I guess something got into it last night. PHEW

I'm doing a 20% water change tonight. The cycle looks to be done, and the algae is receding. The plumbing isn't done but my Dad helped me yesterday so we are finishing it this weekend. I'm at school too. Ryan Janis likes men.

I'll see if I can maybe get a free xenia frag or something at the meeting this month, to see how it does.

Here is a picture of my "lagoon"

Nice aquascaping Tsquad....what type of livestock do you plan on keeping?

Also, how did that chip turn out? No problems yet?

Tyler, no worries about the ammonia test, it will register higher if left out...;)

Hey that aquascaping looks really cool.

Personally, I'd hold off on the Xenia frag. If I still want to do Xenia by the time my tank is almost full, I'll add a small frag- but Xenia is such a fast grower I'm hesitant to add it now.

In your tank that might not be such a problem...:) I would still look for one of the Xenia strains that tends to be a slow grower- like the blueish Xenia(I'm not up on the scientific name here).

I'm one of those Xenia is pretty cool people too..:D

Thank you :)

I dunno, maybe something will be free at the meeting, or someone won't show up and get their frag. Or I could stop being stingy, and buy something, but thats unexpected ;)

Just found this thread, the tank looks good so far. I really like the way the overflow looks. Your lagoon looks like the one on the right side of my tank that is being filled with corals. Don't rush things with coral selection and always go for quality over quantity.

Hey Greg, thanks :)
Your tank is my inspiration; see the first post ;)

I hope to have a nice assortment of SPS, LPS and a few softies. Most of my corals will start as frags from members in CTARS, since I'm on a budget and all. I may dish out the cash once I get a job next winter; for now, I have to referee.

I'm tempted to add something next week (4/17-4/24). It is my vacation from school, and I think it would be great to add something then, so I can monitor it, without the intrusion of school. I was thinking a few snails/crabs to help with the algae; would a small fish, such as a blenny be too far fetched? I'm thinking it is too soon, just want to know what you guys suggest.

Few pictures from today, theme is FEATHER DUSTERS!! They are everywhere!:

Too bad that stupid bubble algae is in the way

I'm trying to get a video of the second one opening up after I scare him closed; it is THE coolest thing.

And my question still stands:

Be careful with that bubble algae, don't pop them. They will hopefully go away on their own when the water starts to mature more. You may want to think about adding a Foxface to the tank, they're different looking and just about the best algae eater out there. They are also extremely hardy so you could add one now if your nitrates aren't high and you don't have any ammonia. Snails and crabs should be fine to add now just make sure you float them longer, inverts take longer to acclimate, I would do it for at least an hour.
Almost all of my SPS pieces are frags and a lot of them are from members of my reef club, I plan to have a wall of SPS covering the entire back top of the tank, it has a ways to go but hopefully will come out as planned.
I know you have a huge empty tank but I'll say it again only buy pieces you really like.

If it were me, I would have a new tank asap. Why would you risk all the effort money and time on a gamble. Especially now when you are just starting out. Be patient get the new tank.
That crack will never leave your mind at rest- whether you are away on vacation, at work, at a family diner at a . . . the list goes on. Sorry to see things go wrong though, don't fret, it happens to all of us. Dont let excitement cloud your judgemet; just by posting this thread you can tell that you've been trying to talk yourself out of buying a new tank. good luck!!
