anyone use asm g3 skimmer?

I'm using one in my 220...and feel it's a bit underpowered for the size I have (although it's a light bioload). For a fish only tank on 180, I think you'll be fine...how big is your sump?

i dont have a sump yet ,and really dont want to do any mods to it ,I just want to drop it in and go

The G3 is a sump skimmer, so I'm a little confused on how you plan on setting this up now (or are you stating you will have a sump at the time you get this)?

Since it is a fish only, I think you would be fine, but it might really depend on how much fish you have in the system.

Are you planning on anything else to assist this, like live rock, a sand bed, or fuge?

The G3 is a horrible choice for a 180. Its 6 inch body is far too small to effectively skim that tank. Not to mention they are way overpriced for their build quality. The manufacturer rating, as with most skimmers, is highly exaggerated.

I have one on my 72 gallon. I am happy with it. If i were to get a tank that size I would go for a bigger one. Personally, I think for the price it is a pretty good deal.

An ASM unmodded out of the box on a 180 is going to come up a bit short IMO. I have a G3 on a 125 reef, It is fully modded, Gate valve, recirc modded, Euroreef pump/impeller and direct fed from my overflow Mesh mod pending.. It does the job OK but I would not try it on anything bigger. I have had it for about 3 years and When I got it the deals was a pretty good one, However there are much better skimmers out theses days that are built better and are actually cheaper. Look at an Octopus or even a DAS .

Can't agree with you here. I ran an unmodded G3 on a FO 180 for 2 years and had no problems filling the cup with goo weekly. It is rated for 225-250 as I recall. It would work fine. Having said that, there are equal or better G3-type skimmers that would be far cheaper (Octopus NW). And better skimmers if you are already willing to spend the money on a G3. Go to the Lighting, Filtration & Other Equipment Forum and ask the question with the money you are willing to spend. There will be a plethora of valid responses.

The caveat here is that your tank is a FO tank. I would not put this skimmer on a 180 reef.

Have in 90g's tank side sump, and think that it is the skimmer's maximum. With gate valve and Calfo's water well.

The same manufacturer produces the new line of skimmers, they should be better.

Ive been running one unmodded on my 180 sps and it is OK but I plan on upgrading at some point.

I keep telling you I'll help you mod that G3 into a much better skimmer. :D

A couple pieces of PVC and a little time and it will perform like a much more expensive skimmer.

I have a modified ASM G3 on a system that has a 300g and 125g show tanks with another 400g worth of support tanks. It runs GREAT!! I picked mine up used and you can too if you keep eyes open.

i have the gate valve mod on my G3, would the recirc mod be worth doing?

I run one on a 140g.

Good Skimmer, good price when i bought it ($242 shipped) about 1 1/2 years ago.

Most skimmers are the same in this price range IMO. Only small performance issues between them all.

ASMs are cheaply built, but do perform. The cap is a bit hard to remove and clean sometimes.

I've got a G3 on my 120 gal and I think I should have gone with a larger skimmer. If I can find a buyer for the G3 I'll buy a euro reef RS180
