Anyone use ChemiPure?

This forum is great. I have been keeping African cichlids for about 10 years and decided to get my feet wet and try a marine tank. So started with a 40 gallon I had. Depending how this goes I hope to convert my 135 gallon into a marine tank one day but decided to do baby steps with the 40 first. Anyway ... been running the 40 gallon tank for about 2 weeks. I have live sand, live rock, two Koralia pumps, skimmer and an aquaclear hob filter. I also just added two damsels which are doing fine. Only thing I have in the hob is a sponge ... I was going to take the hob off but someone said I should take the sponge out and just leave the hob as additional water movement. Is this a good idea? This person also told me I may want to put a ChemiPure bag in the hob just to help with water parameters ... although the water parameters are fine right now ... any input is appreciated. Thanks.

My opinion of Chemipure is that it's just expensive branded granular activated carbon. But yeah, running it is ok. Many people don't like to run carbon because it'll remove some trace minerals/elements, but personally I run carbon 24/7.

You should consider getting an HOB skimmer which will help remove DOC's (dissolved organic compounds).

Eventually, well actually sooner instead of later, you should drill the tank and add a sump.

He has a skimmer. I like to run aquaclears on my tanks. as you already stated..it provides additional flow and is a great spot for carbon (which I run 24/7) as for chemipure....I guess it's supposed to keep PH at proper levels (I've never used it)

Thanks for the quick reply limitdown ... right now I do have a hob skimmer on the 40 gallon ... down the line when I convert the 135 to a marine I will definitely have it drilled and get a sump.

Looking forward to more responses on my 40 gallon set-up.

Thanks.

Sounds like my 40 gallon. I've got a remora HOB skimmer, and a hob filter with a chemipure and purigen. I dont run the filter all the time, Works fine, probably isnt really needed. I dont think the water movement is an issue if you are running a skimmer and 2x koralias, I only use 1 koralia C and thats a lot of flow for a mostly empty tank.
