With a probe it will measure conductivity. The saltier the water is, the easier electricity flows through it. There is no way for any controller to read through a refractometer which actually reads the salt content by slowing the light to whatever extent and reading how far it is bending (refracting)
They will use the contuctivity to measure the salinity equivalent usually in Micromoles. Then you can say whatever that reading is equals 1.026 and that is where I want it to stay. It isn't really reading the same thing but you can establish the starting point where they are the same point and then stick with that.
