anyone use tap for fo/fowlr?

I've always been using tap water until a month ago with no issues. I think I bought my RODI unit just cuz I had the shopholic bug. I don't think RODI is entirely necessary unless the TDS is super high and/or there's heavy metal in the water.

My tap water TDS is typically between 100-150. gotta love the bay area for the clean water.

To me the issue isn't the tap being safe for the fish it's the problem with green algae, diatoms, & cyano. Nothing uglier to me than a big Fish only tank with a bunch of dull ugly rock.

This was my experience.

I ran a tanks using tap water for 8 years (f/o and reef) and although the F/O tanks clearly didnt need the RO/DI they sure did show quick improvements when i made the change.

Given how cheap ro/di units have become, i say why not. We spend so much on the rest of all this stuff. Why not stack the deck in our favor whenever possible?

There are TONS of people who are using RO/DI that have nuisance algae issues. I think we blame the water source, and not the husbandry, just a little too often.
