Hello,
Just wanted to post up my story from buying an apex. I recently bought an apex from Steventnguyen about a month ago. He initially said there is "nothing wrong" with the apex but when i received the apex system--the apex base controller would not stay on long enough to do anything as it seems like it would overheat. I couldnt do anything to with the apex controller. I have called the Steventnguyen which he was very nice (at first) and said he would return my money if i would just go through APEX support first which i did and it took about 3 to 4 days. I was hoping it was just an frimware but after all of the technical support--the apex tech said the board was bad as it needed to be replaced. Which would cost me 150.00. I was like--great okay maybe i'll just get my money back or ask Steventnguy to refund me 150.00 and i'll deal with it. He said okay he would just refund my 150.00 but after that--he never responded and ignores my text. I called him once which he did pick and said he would wire me the money after he sells his tank. I said "Okay" not a problem if money is a problem i can wait. Again, he ignores my text as I texted him a few days later. Anyhow, there is my story--i bought a bad APEX system and until this day--it is at home --DEAD. Im sure the dude that i bought it from is not a bad person(cross my fingers) but at least have some respects for your fellow reefers and give me an update on your situation.

Anyhow, enough of my rant--let me know what you guys think. btw, i paid like 355.00 for the whole apex that is dead :X.

This is why I buy new if it's a high end equipment.
For $105 more you would have a new one under warranty.

Had kinda something like this happen to me recently. Only I paid only partially for the equipment and when I informed the seller that some of the stuff was no good he told me that the bad stuff was a gift and I was paying for the good stuff. Situation almost made me drop the entire hobby.

I am sure the fellow reefer didn't intentionally sell you bad stuff (should say hope). Maybe he is just in a bad spot right now and will make it right with you as I have never heard a bad word about the person you speak of. Good job on not being one of those guys who just came on here thrashing him. That doesn't get anyone anywhere.

Have you tried Ebay to see if maybe you can find just the board?

Yeah, that guy was all over the place.. He says he was getting out of the hobby, then the very next day wanted Drstricklands cadlights setup.. Then another story about no money and speeding tickets...

I was going to pm him about the Neptune.. but something told me this stinks.... Anyways I hope you find a solution to your issue..

I will keep an eye out for any deals on new units too...

That sucks, sorry for your bad buying experience on RC. Hope everything is made right for you by the seller. I just wonder if he new it was bad and still sold it.

Why dose the site say the last 125 they will make ?

I just bought one.. The lite version is being discontinued... its basically the same as the apex less the orp and vrm... Which I do not use.. I think its hard to push the Jr. when the lite is so close to the same price..

You can get an apex junior and use the display, probe, energy bar 8 that came with your used purchase. There is one in the selling forum right now for $120 I think but you only have 20 post so you probably can't see it. You are still ahead of the game or at least break even: $355 + $150 = $505 with the new base you basically just paid for a new apex. I would consider it new because the base unit will be new. I new apex full version with a probe is $525 so you are still $20 off assuming shipping is free.

Funny Story about the same apex

Funny Story about the same apex

HMMM sounds VERY familiar. I originally bought the Apex that the seller in question offered, and after setting it up and what not, I had the same problem happen. It seemed to get hot and then shut off. I told steventnguyen about the problem, and said I would like to return it, even if I could get it fixed or talk to Neptune etc, I was worried about it having other problems in the future. I had been under the impression that it was 2 years old, but the display reset to a date in 2008, making it around 6 years old. Needless to say, I took it back to steventnguyen, who said "I will only take it back if it works," which is unbelievably shady. I took it back to him and he tested it out, and it seemed to work fine, so he took it back. HOWEVER, he kept 60 dollars of my deposit. At this point I was worried I was going to be scammed out of the full 340 I paid him, so I grudgingly accepted a 60 dollar loss. THEN, a few days later, steventnguyen began harassing me over text, demanding I pay him the cost of the Apex because I had "broken" it. This has been one of the worst interactions with a seller I have ever had, not to mention the 60 dollars I lost on top of the stress of it all.

Sorry for your experience xaiz0r, I feel your pain. Also interesting to note he sold it to me for 340, kept 60, then turned around and sold it to you for even more.

Hey guys,
Yea, how unfortunate that such people exist. Im glad to hear everyone's response. i'm still in the process of getting in contact with him. I'm tempted to just drive over to his place and talk to him even if it cost much more--which i dont care but it's the "principle" that matters which he should at least apologize. The leasssttt he can do. Anyhow, generaltoaster--i appreciate your PM and of course everyone's response. I hope to meet the rest of you guys at NVR swap. btw, im a member of frag & cvr. Thanks again guys. Much appreciated!

In his previous for sale thread, he said, " The kid who bought it say its too complicated "... sucks how he knew it was broken but told you that nothing was wrong with it...

Unfortunately it does sound like the worst case scenario here. Sorry for your headache boss. As it is not indicative of how most transactions work here on RC. I have met a ton of really good people here.

What surprised me is this happened locally. He had a thread where people supposedly picked up their jabao in his place of work so it would not be hard to find him. I am sure this can still be resolved.

At least should have discounted the broken part and him take a loss since it's at least 6 year old trying to sell it for a like new used price.

I it's like buying a car with 150k high milage and them advertising for same car same price as with a car with 10k miles same model.
