APEX Temp Probe Extension

Looking to extend my temp probe a few feet as the cable is alittle short. Has anyone done this and how.

This thread led to a dead end. I know I saw some info on this somewhere, but can't find it again. I thought it was an RJ-11 cable and you could use a standard inline coupler made for modems or telephone cords, BUT RJ-11/RJ14 cables do NOT work. I am guessing the plugs are RJ-11? and and the RJ14 plugs are too large?

Please help.

Chances are, if you can plug it in, then you have the right size. HOWEVER, you need to verify that the wire colors stay in the same orientation from one end to the other of your extension cable. Some cables will tend to cross the colors - wouldn't think that should be the case on an extension, but worth taking a look to see.

I've made my own cables using Cat5 and the crimp-on ends. They work very well for extending between the AC3 and DC8/DC4.

I don't have a crimper, never crimped anything before. If I did have the tools to crimp I still wouldn't be sure what parts to buy.

Crimper is only about $10 for a cheap one that will do the job, and they also make self-crimping ends. Check your local hardware shops.

You would need the following:

Cat5 cable (however long a run you need to do, lowes and home depot sell it)
RJ-11 (4-pin) phone connector end to put on the cable
RJ-11 (4-pin) keystone connector end
RJ-11 crimping tool (if you don't get the self-crimping ends) - do a google search for "RJ-11 crimping tool" and you will find a bunch of places that sell them. Found one online that sells for $11.98 shipped with a 20 second search through results.

If you are interested, I can give you more info so you can do this yourself and have a very reliable cable.
