Apex temp settings

Hi all

What are the recommended on off temps for a mixed reef using the Apex Controller?

Thanks

Much of that is "personal preference"..
In general if you maintain your tank between 76 and 83 deg F all should be good..

When I was using heaters I set mine to turn on at 76 and off and 78 or something like that..
Some choose to only allow a 1 deg swing or even .5 degrees.. IMO that is a bit excessive as corals can easily handle a few degree swing daily..

BRS did a show where they shared a lesson learned about overly tight temp ranges. Ryan was using 0.5 degrees on the BRS 160 and the on off cycle was so high (in Minnesota) he actually wore out the relay on his power bar in just 2 years. After seeing that I backed mine off to 2 degrees. It now only comes on twice a day in winter (San Diego) and I expect less than once a day in summer but we'll see. Hoping for more than 2 years on my Apex power bar, that's for sure.

So what settings do you have yours coming on and off?

From what I had read, around 78F.

But, from my own personal experience I really only saw issues when temps exceeded 82. More algae and in general things not looking good (murky looking water).
I think it is "good" to expose the tank to some ups (83) and lows (74), so to not to shock your fish/corals if they there is power outage.
From my own personal experience, I got my tank used and traveled 8 hours in a car when the temperature outside was 68F (or even less). I know the water temperature got that low for sure and everything was just fine.

There is a good article out there that discusses the loss of oxygen in the tank with each 1 incremental degree above 80F. Life in the tank gets stressed out not because of the temperature, but because of less oxygen inside the tank bc of the higher temperature. I do not remember the exact % of lesser oxygen, but I was surprised.

Anyway, it is possible you could keep the water temperature down on the lower end (76) but on the high end (82) is not good.

Personally, I let my tank swing in the 77-81F range. Mostly because I live in a tropical climate and my issue is keeping things cold w/o an excessive A/C bill.

Thanks for bringing this up... I've adjusted my Apex to range another .5 degree because of the notes. I was sticking to 77-78 but I've adjusted to 76.5 - 78. Dropped the backup heater down a half step too. (The backup heater already saved our butts once last year)
