Aptasia-tried everything-now what?

These things are creeping up on my corals. I dont want to dry out rocks and lose all the sponges and other good stuff I love. I have tried all the stand by treatments. My husband even recently surprised me with a majano wand and I think it made them multiply! My frags have finally settled in and begun to encrust the rocks. This is so frustrating. I am thinking about trying peppermint shrimp again because I read you need a group of them and you need "true" peppermints. I had 2 but they didnt do a thing and then they disappeared. If anyone knows where I can get true peps, preferably in the Connecticut/Mass area please let me know. Also, what should I look for when deciding if they are true? Or if anyone knows of a copperband who is a proven aptasia eater (and also eat fish food) I would try that. Or any other ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I got a pack of 5 of them from saltwaterfish.com.. I also just ordered the majano wand (which works on aptasia too of course), so once i'm done with it, I'd be happy to lend it to you (whether you're a paying CTARS member or not, I could care less, just trying to help out) if you come pick it up/drop off.

i used aptasia-x and it took care of them in the first night then i put 6 peppermint shrimp in the next day and the took care of the ones i couldnt get to! just take the shrimp out after they eat the aptasias cause they can turn towards the corals for food!

Can you isolate any of the rocks? Kalk slurry injected with. A syringe to the mouth worked like a charm for me, but I had to take the rock out to a separate tank. I imagine you could just move the rocks to a high spot in the tank as well so you can get at the buggers easier. I have a single true pep (at least it fits the bio) and it never went near them. I'm guessing the trio hits up the law of averages on them.

Hope you have good luck!

Thank you so much for the offer. I have the majano wand and it seems like they have multiplied since I have used it. Has anyone else noticed this?

Kalk paste worked wonders for me...Wiped out all of them that I managed to put it on. You have to mix it so that when you dispense it it kinda just blobs onto them and doesn't move. Have to take care though as I burned a piece of my horn coral doing this cause i dropped a chunk of paste on it. It made a full recovery in a couple of days though.

I have read about people injecting lemon juice into them and watching them implode. I have never tried it but I have read that in multiple threads and sites. Good luck with the extermination.

Majano Wand is an absolute WASTE OF MONEY...useless POS...if you can cancel your order, do so immediately!

I would suggest a bristletail file fish...I have 2, in my 450g DT, and I am constantly lending them to friends to clean up their tanks.
If you need Caribbean Peps, I would suggest Reeftopia(dot)com...depending on the size of your tank, they do have 'lot' pricing...

Depending on the specs of your tank and its contents many butterfly fish do a great job with aiptasia while being a very good looking fish imo. In my past tanks Aiptasia X for the large ones and peppermint shrimp for the small ones did the trick and kept it under control. Never had any issues with any peppermint shrimp with my coral either.

Bristletail filefish have been known to eat other inverts and corals unfortunately. I'd rather not risk them especially considering getting a fish out of a 210g (and I'm sure a 450g like you have) is a pita. I'd rather zap them one by one.

I would suggest Aiptasia X and lots of peppermint shrimp the more you can buy the better your chances and dont feed for a few days after putting them in let them forge that way they will have a better chance just my 2c

And make sure they're actually peppermint shrimp and not camels... I've heard some terrible stories about the mix up

I have used/had bristletail filefish for the past 3 years...MAYBE (big maybe)...one of them ate some zoas, but I can't confirm that! Never bothered anything else...
They are so slow, that I can almost catch them with my bare hands!...but easily in minutes with a net, and lend them to my friends, who in turn, re-catch the fish & bring it back to me!
As for the 'Zapper'...I wasted my $ about 8 months ago...and I guarantee that you will be "zapping them one by one" for the rest of your life! I lend my majano ward to anyone in my area that wants it, just to prove to them, that it is USELESS! I won't sell it, because I don't want to 'take' anyone's $!

BTW...since you're not far from me, you're welcome to borrow it, if you don't already have one!

+1 to the filefish... get one of those, and poof, no more aiptasia :)

However, GL with whatever you do Shayna, sorry to hear about your issues...

it is very easy to tell the difference between camels and peppermint shrimp...

peppermints...

camels...

though the colors are similiar, the patterns are different and much more visible on the camel... as well as the camel as the large "hump", hence the name and though you cant see it well in the pic, its very much obvious that its there... and the eyes are much, much more pronounced and larger...

Thanks everyone for your help. I used some Zap-tasia which is like aptasia-x this morning, we will see how that goes. I have had some success with this in the past. I am also going to try a group of pep shrimp. I do love filefish and might try one if I can find a good one. Is it just the one kind, the bristletooth?
