TrojanScott.... I would suggest get the 1262, if it's too much, you can gate it. (I'm beginning to think my mag9 works better than my eheim1260. The pressure is fine, I suspect it's weak flow.)

Well I bought a digital camera, how do I post a picture of my skimmer here? Mark

Has anyone tried to run a line off of the air valve? I think I want to run a hose into my closet so it will quiet the air sucking sound. What do you think?

I have an air hose connected to my air intake (see my pic a couple of posts up). I believe it is 1" "ID (inner diameter). Works great and acts as a silencer.

Here is my Ev120 running with a Pan world 40px skimming much better than the mag 7. The pump is silent too. Mark

Granted i have a watts air valve, the stock one threads were stripped. I have about a 6" piece of 3/8" airline tubing going into it, and that alone pretty much quietens' it, i did have it stuck into and elbow with filterfloss stuffed in it, and it was Silent.. but the elbow kept falling off.

Here is a photo of my EV-180 with the Eheim 1262.

After two weeks of playing around with the setup I finally got it working. It took a while because the AquaC manual does not get much into the secret tricks we all discovered on Reef Central. First, it needs a larger pump. Second, adjust using the air valve to get fine bubbles. With my pump ball valve full open, the water level is just an inch above the outside box.

The air valve needs careful adjustment. In my experiments, too much air results in turbulent water movement, large bubbles, and unstable foam with surprise overflows. Too little air does not produce enough foam. It has to be just right.

flyingpolarbear,

What's the nifty sound proofing material you have? Does it work? Where did you get it?

-Nathan

The acoustic foam works great! It really cuts down on the high frequency noises. Another nice property is that it is fire resistant. I held a flame to a small piece but it would just turn black. The best place to order is www.mcmaster.com. Type "acoustic foam" in the search box and scroll down to the sculptured foam section: melamine triple peak. McMaster has wholesale prices, no minimums, and fast shipping.

Made of fiber-free melamine. One side of the foam is cut into peaks and valleys to create more surface area to absorb sound waves and reduce sound levels. Foam is rigid (not flexible).
Melamine triple peak foam is cut into wedges that form alternating square patterns. Easily mounts to most surfaces with adhesives. Temperature range is 0Ã"šÃ‚° to 302Ã"šÃ‚° F. Meets UL 94VO and ASTM E84 Class 1 flammability requirements.
Melamine triple peak foam with Hypalon coating has an easy-to-clean vinyl coating on one side that protects foam from oils, acids, and solvents in harsh environments. Temperature range is 0Ã"šÃ‚° to 250Ã"šÃ‚° F. To Order: Please specify color of vinyl coating (choices listed in the table below). Foam is white.

Ok folks, I've found some links which to me were good for a laugh.
I thought I'd share. :)

Curious myself about the soundproofing product, I googled the term.

Melamine

I then noticed it's produced from urea .

Ok, ok, another urea site .

Now that's the best way to bypass the nitrogen cycle I've ever seen.......flame retardant soundproofing plastics! :eek2:
Somewhere some whitecoat chemist is making a next gen plastic for our next generation skimmer out of our skimmate. :rolleye1:

I recently put Anthony Calfo's advice to the test by experimenting with two Aqua C EV skimmers on two different systems/setups. The first skimmer, an Aqua C EV-240 was externally installed to a sump where the skimmer's pump was placed directly in the path of raw water which flowed straight from the aquarium into the skimmer via a 40 gallon breeder sump. This setup requires me to change the collection cup twice daily and yields very dark skimmate, which overflows into a five gallon bucket if I do not restrict the output, otherwise it would produce even more dark skimmate daily .

The second skimmer, an Aqua C EV 180, was placed in a 30 gallon open sump (i.e., not fed raw water) and produced considerably less skimmate until I altered my sump design and moved the skimmer's pump directly in the path of the raw water which flowed straight from the main tank. Now this skimmer is yielding lots of dark skimmate as well. Some skimmers can perform well in open sumps... but most do not.

Anthony Calfo is right!!! Anything less than raw water overflowed or fed straight into your skimmer is a compromise. I highly recommend Aqua C skimmers, and if you ever have a problem or issue, the President of the company, Jason Kim, will contact you directly with a solution. Great skimmers and great customer service!!!

I have a Aqua c remora pro. I have to say i'm really disapointed in its performance. Although it hardly makes any noise at all it manages to make even less skimmate. I get about 1/4" of skimmate in the cup after about a week or two of running 24hours a day. :-(

I have read through 25 pages of Aqua-C talk, I will be upgrading my skimmer from a berlin turbo to a EV-180, i am running 3 tanks that share a sump, total volume of about 175 gal. Med to heavily stocked tanks, one is BB other is sand, The Aqua C site says mag 7 i read here to upgrade to mag 9.5 i will be running the skimmer out of sump, any suggestions.... I plan on ordering within 2 days so i need a quick response thanks for the help ! I will make sure to post the pic so i can join the club

I think maybe the 180 might be too small for 175 gallons, maybe some of the EV veterans will chime in on that. Also consider a differant pump there has been alot of positive comments on the Eheim pumps. Mark

Just got my EV120 from Marine Depot. Looks like I need to get a 1260 pump.

First question, how high is your skimmer in the sump? At the center of the gate valve, mine is 8 inches high. (I made a stand) I am building a sump out of an old 20 gallon.

Question 2, can you rotate the injector to face the pump? What about the air intake. I would like them to be turned 90* from where they are now. Thanx

Matt

yes you can turn the injector and air valve, they just thread into the skimmer box.. be carefull with the air valve, as i stripped mine.. i've been using the quick connect to threaded air valve from lowes. been fine.
the height doesn't really matter, as long as the exit water is completely above the surface of your sump. highere up you go above that, the more water crashing noise you'll get. Plus the longer the hose between pump nad input will have to be, which is not good, since you're adding head pressure to the pump and cutting its flow.
Feederfish, In order of performance: Iwaki 30 RLT, Eheim 1262, Mag 9, and Mag 7. This from Steve prince at Aqua-C customer service. Guess we can interject the eheim 1260 between the 2 mags

How old is it ? and do you keep the up draft cylinder into the colection cup cleaned weekly if not every other day ? , also r u surface skimming ?

1 - It is about 4 months old.
2 - I clean it every weekend when I empty the container. I use the little brush they supply and clean as much as i can.
3 - No surface skimming. Not sure how I would set that up in my system.
