AquaC EV-180 Skimmer Height

I noticed last night that my skimmer return gate valve is about 5" above the sump waterline. I have the skimmer sitting on a PVC stand which I can adjust relatively easily (easy being relative term as moving anything this large under a tank is not easy). The directions state the minimum height of skimmer should have the gate valve above waterline but no mention of maximum height. Skimmer seems to be functioning well. I added a 90 and 5" piece of PVC to the discharge to lessen noise from falling water. Am I impacting the skimmers performance either positively or negatively at its current height in relation to water level?

PS - lessons learned for newbies. As recommended when I fired up the skimmer I placed the skim cup discharge to return to the sump in case the skimmer went crazy. Already flooded floor once by placing discharge hose in container and the skimmer pumping mostly water and overflowing the catch bucket. However, the discharge hose ended up under water line in sump. Couldn't figure out why the skimmer wouldn't work right. Well as you probably guessed with discharge hose under water I basically deadheaded the airflow of the skimmer negating its ability to function properly. LL ensure discharge hose from skimmer cup is free to allow proper airflow out of skimmer.
