AquaC Remora Skimmer Question

This thread is perfect for me!

I just got my Remora in the mail yesterday with the MJ1200. Having the same problem.

I'm going to fiddle with the white screw....

I got some replys from AquaC customer service, and sense it sounds like some other people are having the same problem I will post what they told me .....

Thanks for the message, I can help you out. It's completely normal for a layer of water to accumulate above the injector plate - if it was sealed, there would be no way for air to enter the reaction chamber. Our skimmer isn't venturi driven, so air doesn't get sucked in through the pump - it's pulled into the skimmer by the high pressure stream of water as it enters the reaction chamber. As long as the skimmer is producing lots of bubbles in the reaction chamber, it's working properly, and there's nothing that the skimmer itself can do to prevent organics from sticking to those bubbles, which creates foam. The injector access screw isn't an adjustment, but simply a plug that allows access to the injector for cleaning.

1/4" of skimmate per day really doesn't sound out of the ordinary. How large is your tank, and how heavily stocked? What color is the skimmate collected (water, tea, or coffee)? The skimmer can only really respond to the concentration of organics in the water, so if the concentration is low, you wouldn't expect the skimmer to pull out a large amount of skimmate. Also, if the skimmer is pulling out a dark, concentrated skimmate, the amount of wastes being pulled out will be high, but the volume may not seem like much, because there's not much water being removed with it. If possible, pics of the collection cup and skimmate being produced, along with the bubbles being produced in the reaction chamber might be helpful in determining if there's a problem or not.

Thanks again, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Second Reply ....
If you're getting a very dry skimmate, it's important to clean the collection cup often, as organic buildup on the inside of the riser tubes will make it harder for the foam to rise into the cup, and encourage the deposition of more organics inside the tube. If the water chemistry is such that you're only getting a dry foam, you might be able to get a wetter foam by upgrading to a stronger pump, such as the Rio 1400. If you'd like to try it, I can send you a 3/4" Remora Pro intake barb fitting, which can be swapped out with the existing 1/2" barb. Send me your address, and I'll get that out to you. Let me know what you decide!
