Aquaculture

Nothing to save the environment is cheap. All 'green' building products and such are much more expensive then the ones that are destroying our precious earth. We ALL are killing our earth by being in this hobby, sorry to say. Removing live rock, sand and specimens from the ocean it taking it out of balance. This is a great and facinating hobby to be in but try to buy aqua/maricultured fish and corals. Please do your part to help save our earth. Do any of you recycle as well????

Please do your part to help save our earth.

To borrow a few lines from George Carlin...(censored)

We're so self-important. Everybody's going to save something now. "Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails." And the greatest arrogance of all: save the planet. What? Are these censored people kidding me? Save the planet, we don't even know how to take care of ourselves yet. We haven't learned how to care for one another, we're gonna save the censored planet?

I'm getting tired of that censored. I'm tired of censored Earth Day, I'm tired of these self-righteous environmentalists, these white, bourgeois liberals who think the only thing wrong with this country is there aren't enough bicycle paths. People trying to make the world safe for their Volvos. Besides, environmentalists don't give a censored about the planet. They don't care about the planet. Not in the abstract they don't. You know what they're interested in? A clean place to live. Their own habitat. They're worried that some day in the future, they might be personally inconvenienced. Narrow, unenlightened self-interest doesn't impress me.

Besides, there is nothing wrong with the planet. The planet is fine. The PEOPLE are censored. The planet is fine. Compared to the people, the planet is doing great. Been here four and a half billion years. Did you ever think about the arithmetic? The planet has been here four and a half billion years. We've been here, what, a hundred thousand? Maybe two hundred thousand? And we've only been engaged in heavy industry for a little over two hundred years. Two hundred years versus four and a half billion. And we have the CONCEIT to think that somehow we're a threat? That somehow we're gonna put in jeopardy this beautiful little blue-green ball that's just a-floatin' around the sun?

The planet has been through a lot worse than us. Been through all kinds of things worse than us. Been through earthquakes, volcanoes, plate tectonics, continental drift, solar flares, sun spots, magnetic storms, the magnetic reversal of the poles...hundreds of thousands of years of bombardment by comets and asteroids and meteors, worldwide floods, tidal waves, worldwide fires, erosion, cosmic rays, recurring ice ages...And we think some plastic bags, and some aluminum cans are going to make a difference? The planet...the planet...the planet isn't going anywhere. WE ARE!

We're going away. Pack your censored folks. We're going away. And we won't leave much of a trace, either. Thank God for that. Maybe a little styrofoam. The planet'll be here and we'll be long gone. Just another failed mutation. Just another closed-end biological mistake. An evolutionary cul-de-sac. The planet'll shake us off like a bad case of fleas. A surface nuisance.

Do any of you recycle as well????

When we remodeled our kitchen we had a slide-out installed that holds two waste cans. We use one for trash and one for recyclables. With this it gives us a convenient way to keep them separate and most weeks we have far more in the recycle bin than in the trash.

I'm starting my new tank with Marco Rocks--I'd love to tell you it's because I am altruistic and very concerned about preserving the natural oceanic environment--but to be really honest I am using dead rocks because my beloved Marshall Island live rock is currently unavailable and I think Marco Rocks are the closest looking to MI LR...

The fact that I will be seeding it with only 10 lbs. of live rocks, as opposed to starting the tank with 90+ pounds of live rock harvested from the sea, and will therefore have a little less impact on some patch of ocean somewhere, is a nice benefit however...

What's interesting is that in doing extensive research on Marco Rocks here on RC, and reading many threads on the subject, I can count on one hand the number of people who posted that they were using this dead rock in order to avoid using live rock and the depletion of our oceanic resources that LR represents. Almost universally the appeal and popularity of Marco Rocks could be boiled down to two words (which I think represents the mindset of too many reef aquarists):

"CHEAP"
"ATTRACTIVE"

Todd, what do they do with the big hole in the ground where this rock comes from?

Save the planet is truly a bad term as the planet will survive without/despite us just fine. It is us that will not survive. It should be save the environment so you have food to eat, water to drink and air to breathe. IE: Save Yourself.

ill throw something in on this one, screw saving the enviroment for us humans, were the ones that have screwed it up with all our mass industrialization and production. lets worry about the enviroment for all the creatures that haven't done a thing to hurt the planet but are taking the brunt of our stupidity. yea who cares if we screw up the enviroment enough to were we cant survive but if that happens that means we've also destroyed it enough to were the animals that were just going about there daily lives only being interupted by us cannot survive. so lets not worry about saving the planet for us humans but saving the planet so we can continue to enjoy the animals the deserve the enviroment of the earth

I think it is too late for many many animals and most people do not care one bit! :-(
