Aquaone Array 10g - First tank

eratic

New member
Hey just bought a new 10g to kick of my reef tank, Ive been fascinated by them for years and finally took the leap.

Tank dimensions 52cm x 26 x 27.5
Built in filter/overflow with carbon, ceramic and sponge filters
LED's are only 3watt..

Ive ordered a nano powerhead and 3Watt x 6 L.E.D off fish-street.com

Bought 3KG of dry rock as there live rock is covered with lots of brown stuff at shop

Anyways a few quick questions.

1. Can i cycle the dry rock in the tank without using a piece of live rock? or should i get a small piece of live rock to start?

2. I dont plan on getting a skimmer straight away.. Can i use the current filtration or should i remove and put some other media?

3. Can i start cycling the tank using only the stock leds and filter pump while waiting for my powerhead and led to arrive

thats an interesting looking tank. what manufacturer is that? the edging on the corner looks similar to my fluval spec V

good start! You've gotten the cycle started now. It would go a bit quicker with a small piece of live rock which will populate the bacteria faster. Also more fun during the cycling wait time because you can stare at the rock constantly wondering, what is that? Is that alive?? etc :)

Cool little tank :) Nano's can be a lot of fun

1) Yes you can cycle without live rock, but it will go faster with a small piece

2) I would remove any filter media you don't plan on using in the final setup. You don't want to have your benifical bacteria growing on something you are just going to remove. And if its bioballs they can turn in to a nitrate facory really fast.

3) You don't need any lights when you are cycling. However you will most likely go through the algae blooms sometime so might as well get it over with durring the cycle. Stock lights will work fine for algae :)

Thanks yea i havent seen these tanks anywhere online! its brand is aqua one NZ

I dont know what filter media i need.. Im just using the sponge and carbon at the moment and not the ceramic balls. I plan on doing frequent water changes.

Also ive got the temperature at 27.5degrees, Should i go higher for the cycle?

tested water again today.

Results are..

0.5-1.0ppm ammonia
0.25ppm Nitrite
5ppm Nitrate

Shouldnt i be seeing ammonia first? This is only day 3 of cycle...

I might put a shrimp in there or something or maybe a piece of live rock.

Its got a little aiptasia on it. Will it die in the cycle? Should i leave or remove it?

ph 8.0
Ammonia 1.0
Nitrite 2.0
Nitrate 10?....

Got my new light and Powerhead today, Lights ok.. Might be a bit small for the tank so ill probally just get a second one. later on

How long should i expect it to cycle with the 2lb of live rock and 6lb of dry?

I got the live rock home within 30min in water.. so there shouldnt be much die off.

Light is a green element evo 12 6x3watt LED ( note the piece of rock in the middle is very white in color compared to the other rocks, So it appears to be a very focused light )

Hey guys quick question would appreciate an answer

Ive been cycling by putting fish food in everyday. I have a piece of liverock from an established tank

When i put the fish food in im not seeing a spike of ammonia.. But the nitrites are going up and so are the Nitrates a little.

Day 7.
Ammonia 0.25
Nitrite 3-5ppm
Nitrate 20ppm

ok day 12.

0 Ammonia
0 Nitrite
40 Nitrate

Am I right doing water changes now? and maybe buying a cleaner shrimp or a fish in a few days?

heaps of brown algae **** is in the tank atm too.. because of the nitrates maybe? ive got some phos-zorb im gonna put in too.

The brown algae would be a diatom bloom. You're going to want to get those nitrates down before you think about adding any fish.

got nitrates down to 5 with water changes and vacuumed all detritus up changed carbon and GFO and cleaned sponge. Added a tiny Clown and a cleaner shrimp today + 1 polyp(haha) gonna let it sit for a few weeks before adding anymore coral

The small clown doesnt seem to want to let the shrimp clean him haha and he just hangs out swimming back and forth against front glass. + the original live rock seems to have quite alot of purple stuff on it and spots are showing up on the other rocks?
