i took out the filter and replaced with live rock, i left the ceramic rings in the second chamber and put the carbon in the third chamber.

what else am i missing?

i used established tank water and black sand (not live)

what should be my next step?

looking forward to the replies

Well Since you used water from your tank I think in about a week or so you will be able to add a clown fish and some snails and crabs. Thats what i did with my 12 gallon aquapod used 5 gallons of water from my 90 gallon and used 6 gallons of regular water. I added a black perculia clown after a week and he is doing great right now. Never had any problems.

Well, I would get rid of your ceramic rings. They're just going to become home to a very large population of bacteria and turn into a nitrate factory. Better to rely on your live rock and live rock rubble. Better yet, turn that chamber into a fuge with cheato.

Also, you should be testing your water for at least pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. You shouldn't add critters until your ammonia and nitrite test zero.

Then, take it slowly. Patience is a virtue. Stock your tank slowly.

Personally, I think you should add your fish after several months and start with corals first. Get some cheap frags from the LFS or friends. Make sure they survive. Get used to feeding your coral and monitoring and maintaining your water quality. Fish are a heavy bio load and they complicate feeding your corals.

Have fun!

Water from an existing tank doesnt matter. Biological - which is what you want in a newly set up tank - does not exist in the water, but rather on the sand bed, live rock and other semi rough surfaces in a tank. The best thing to do is seed with established sand, rock or...I hate to say it...bio balls to get the bacteria population up.

Hope this helps.
