hey does anyone have any plans for how to build a new stand say for a 55 gal tank? i've got the ability to get it built, just a step in the right direction for how much and to what specification i need to get everything to. the search is down so i can't try that at this moment so any help would be appreciated greatly!

Basically, you need to build a frame out of 2X4's and then sheet it with plywood. It's a simple procedure. Just use some good long screws to put everything together, and you can sheet it with Luan, then put some trim on it to make it nice. make the frame a little larger, say 1/4" than your tank's frame size. I would offer to help, but I have alot to get done this week and next. If you are at the Tri-Cities Meeting, we could discuss it there.

You definitely want a piece of plywood at least along the back. This will keep it from falling over sideways.

It really helps keep it stable and square, as well.

I'll draw up some plans for you and post them. It's a 55 gallon tank, right? I'll even figure out your cuts as well, and how much wood you'll need. I do recommend buying the 2x4's in shorter lengths, though. The longer they are, the more they warp. The more they warp, the harder it will be for you to keep your stand square.

It may cost a bit more, but it mays off in a well built stand.

Another note: I found using thick 3/4" plywood for a 'shell' and cutting it perfectly square on a table saw allowed me to clamp my 2x4 frame "square" before I attached the plywood with screws.

Table saws and miter saws are your friends. If you don't have one, I'd find someone that did. This allows straight, square cuts and really helps out a lot.

I did mine out of 3/4" plywood and 1" solid oak. No 2X4's required, and it's been standing for years on a 125 gallon. Also, very few screws, mostly glue and high pressure clamping.

Really? I hear 2x4's are really overboard unless it's for a 150 gallon plus tank, but I always like to be certain, lol.

Have any pictures of your stand, cee? I'd love to see it.
