You certainly don’t need one, and I’d venture to say the vast majority don’t run one. But they do have the benefits of keeping the water clear, helping with algae, and of course killing any disease floating in the water. So doesn’t hurt to run one if you wish, but don’t think you need one either.

I was curious on this one as well...as i the tank my friend gave me came with one.
The thing i was nervous about hooking it up is will it kill any beneficial bacteria or the pods that get flushed through it?

Search www.wetwebmedia.com for "UV sterilizer". You will get all the pros and cons in the articles and FAQs. Basically, they can help clarify water by zapping free-floating algae, but they also zap good things like pods, etc. They are not very effective at killing parasites due to the conditions that must exist for that to happen (pristine water, no particulates, slow flow rate, clean sleeves, new (6 months or newer) bulbs)). Even if you meet this demand, unless you run every ounce of return water through the sterilzer, something is bound to remain/survive. I agree that carbon is almost as good (and a lot cheaper) at clarifying water, and that there are better/more important things on which to spend your money. But, hey, if you have the money to spend and the space, then why not?

In my opinion, it's an unnecessary addition to a tank. Run carbon, a skimmer and do regular water changes.
