AQUAvitro anyone

I recently started dosing the new Seachem Aqua Vitro products in my tank. Things seem to be going well. I've been having problems with low alkalinity, but the Vitro 84 took care of that. I also am using the Ions and Fuel for reefs. When I dose them, I dose them together. But everytime I do, I get a green algae bloom. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this because of the amino acids in the fuel? Any help would be great. Thank you very much.

seesick,

I am not familiar with the line of products that you are using.

If you add to much of a carbon source (this includes amino acids), this can lead to algae and bacterial blooms.

With the combination of products you are adding, it is possible that there may be other factors causing this also. One example that comes to mind would be if you are dosing too much iron.

Aquavitro Fuel is what you are using. Now that is quite a combination of carbon sources and micro nutrients.

Obviously if you want to continue using this stuff, you will need to back off on the amount you are dosing to prevent the blooms from occurring. Perhaps reducing your dose in 1/2 and go from there. You don't want the blooms to occur.

FWIW, most hobbyists would work with one nutrient or carbon source at a time that you find within this concoction to see what effects each may have on your tank inhabitants and system.

I used the fuel line for awhile till it ran out. It seemed to work fine but no algae blooms for me. I did not buy it again because it was expensive and only came in a small bottle. Im not sure on the ions stuff but try dosing separately like ions part during day then the fuel at night after lights are out.

I used their buffer, magnesium and their calcium additives for a little while. Just too expensive in the LFS IMO.

Although the results were OK, I believe I had better results using Seachem's Reef Builder and Advantage Calcium (all powders).

I have been using the Fuel and Ion supplements on my 185 for about the last 2 months and am happy with both. The only difference is I dose Fuel daily rather than per the instructions weekly and I have not had an algae bloom. I have noticed some color improvement and better polyp extension on the SPS.

My pricing has not been that much higher than the previous Kent products I was using from the LFS.

I am pretty sure that those types of foods are useless unless you are using them to enrich another type of food... Even then there are alot of better options.

Just my opinion.

It sounds like you are either adding to much Fuel for your tank, or your nutrient levels are a bit to high already, and the Fuel is pushing it into algea territory.

Cut back on your dosage and feeding, or skim more agressivly/change water more often.

I've had good luck with Fuel, it speeds up growth a touch, and seems to help corals color up and recover from stress more quickly. But I do use it very sparringly.

Anyone use Brightwell, or have used?

Do you like the AV or Brightwell better?

I'm a fan of Brightwell, but the AV at the LFS is tempting. The owner said he uses it and loves it, in his personal tank.

He didn't help, because he likes Brightwell, as well. And since he owns the LFS, might as well try the products you sell, out.

Is this competition for Brightwell, or is this a super-premium line?

I use the 8.4, calcification and fuel. My skimmer pretty much takes care of any over dosage of fuel, there seems to be a sweet spot when you use it as in over and under dosing. If i use quite a bit of it my tank looks a bit cloudy up until i do a water change. The 8.4 has been good about maintaining my alk and ph but thats with dosing everyday might become an expensive hassle in the long run but i shall see. Calcification works great, and i like overall the ease of using these products makes it for an easy schedule and i pretty much noticed over nice color/growth. It is easier to obtain for me than the brightwell stuff. Really tempted to do so :D
