Any tricks on keeping these guys healthy and alive? I've heard mixed reviews on them and would love to hear from hobbyists with good and bad experiences before I try them.

I have 2 of them (white & green) What I have found over the years is that they'e relatively hardy as long as they're healthy when you get them. Pay attention to the color of their bodies. They should have a more fleshy color to them. I feed mine every other day. Doing well under PC lighting in a 150 tall.
