It is all about creating the right environment. Chalice are fairly easy to care for, but in a high flow, real high light system they may not do so well. Try and keep it towards the bottom and in medium flow.
It's not dependant on the generic term LPS or SPS that can make a coral difficult to house. Some SPS are incredibly hardy, and can survive situations that would make softies and LPS melt. Same can be said with all coral. Theres always going to be corals that are relatively hardy, regardless of what generic category their thrown in, and same can be said with difficult/fragile ones.
Generally speaking LPS are fairly hardy corals. But as with anything there are always exceptions like Blastomussa, being the first thing that comes to mind. They can wither away on a moments notice unexplainably, same can be said with the elegance coral, or goniopora. Id put the elegance and goni as probably the two most elusive and difficult to keep LPS at the moment, and definately should be avoided except by experienced reefers(2+yrs) IMO.
Candycanes, frogspawn, torches, and acans probably the most easiest. But every system is different as is the hobbyist and what is deemed easy by one can be a challenge for another, so most of this is just generally speaking. Good luck, hard part is just settling on a few; as with most of us here, you'll eventually find its just downright impossible
Well said, Justin74. Those umbrella terms aren't scientific at all- they just make it easier for people who don't study taxonomy all day! It's very subjective and of course- very dependent on the environment. Of course luck is luck sometimes....
i have done great with torch and candy cane coral that i have in my tank.torch grew into massive colony screaming color to it to.never tryied care on chalice or micro. for $200 a frag of this watermelon chalice i hope luck is on my side thank you guys
