Are my Picassos going to lay?

I have a pair of grade A picassos, and they have been acting a little odd lately. Today, they are very protective of their little cave area, the male was cleaning out sand, both have been chasing away other fish from the area, and I've been watching the female biting the male.

What do you think?

Yes absolutely it is trying to spawn. If you are planning on raising the broods, then I suggest putting in apiece of pvc pipes or a broken piece of terracota pot and put it in there so that it can lay eggs on the pvc pipe or piece of terracota pot. It will be easier to transport it to a hatching tank after that. Good luck and congrats!

Thanks. I'm excited about the opportunity to try to raise them. I won't try for the first one, but I've already added a few books to my Christmas wish list :)

I got mine in May, and they are the nicest clowns I've ever had. I have some older pics, but when the lights come in another 20 min, I can take some more to show you the growth and coloration progression.

This is the pic when I first got them in May:

Ok, here is a pic I took about 2 min ago. They have grown up quite a bit, and put on some black coloration. They did host a GBTA, but I accidentally killed it, so they just swim around all day or hangout under their little cove.

Very nice Picassos. I have a grade a pair myself, but they do not show any signs of mating yet. They are hosting a rock with mushrooms. I have a purple Malu, that Im patiently waiting for them to discover.

When I put my GBTA in my tank, it took them exactly two week to find it and start hosting. After that, they rarely left the nem, which kinda of got on my nerves. haha

Ressurecting this thread I guess from a couple weeks but just wondering.. Any news on the spawning behavior? And eggs or anything fun?

Nothing yet. They are still aggressive around their home every once in a while, but no eggs :(

I also have a pair of Grade A's that host in a GBTA. My pair has acted like this every night for about 2-3 months and never laid eggs. They've even gone as far as mimicking spawning behavior (shaking all over the rocks with the female going first over and area then the male following.) Still no eggs.

I have no intention of raising them, I would just like to see it. I also have had my GBTA big, colorful, and healthy for 1.5 years and its never split. I would love to see these two events in my tank.

My clowns laid eggs twice already. Don't have time to try to raise them so after they hatch prob got eaten up by my coral beauty. My clown cleaned up the rock spotless before laying them.

your clowns don't look mature enough to be spawning. they were probably bonding and figuring out the pecking order. there will be more of a pronounced size difference when they are mature, with the larger being the female.

I agree the female is much larger than the male. With my clowns the male was very active in cleaning and watching over the rock where the eggs were laid.
