Are Powder Browns just as difficult as Powder Blue's?

realistically, yes. There are 2 different "powder browns", and one certainly typically fares better than the other, but both are comperable in care, requirements, and difficulties to the powder blue.

I would "3rd" that!! :)

Although just like a PBT, if you can buy one that's eating good and QT it, you should be ok.

yeah, make sure you QT the one I got nuke my tank with ich
Yeah, mine knocked out my instantly favourite fish, a 1/2 and 1/2 Blue Face Angel.:(

Ah...Which Powder Brown do we speak of?? Ancanthurus Japonicus or Nigerians?
Japonicus is the hardier out of the two..And I would say survival rate is better than that of a Powder Blue..BUT..these are not easy fish.. They are prone to ich and other parasites [Velvet, flukes, copepods..etc..etc...] I have one, I battled ich with him..then some strange illness that made him all blotchy..At one point my fish was near death, lying on the bottom and breathing very heavy.. to this day am not exactly sure what was wrong but luckily the treatments I used worked..He is in my 240 and fat ,fat ,fat...He was clean of any spots when I placed him in there but now has little 'pimples' on him..No its not ich, [don't even go there:rolleyes: ] It was brought on by the stress of moving to the new tank and being bullied.. It does not affect my other fish including my Hippo Tang..Whatever it is...there is no cure for it as this fish has been through it all!! My guess is a Myxospordean or Microspordean infection

I recently had a heater malfunction...my tank was up to 93:eek: The only fish I lost was an Argi Angel...My Powder Brown survived..

So the point to my long boring post is...these are not for beginners or for people who want an 'easy ' fish..Do not get one unless you are committed to treating this fish in a quarantine because 90% of them will have some issue. Mine was in qt for 6 months. They are hardy once you get them past the ich and other problems , but it is a lot of work

they are a touchy fish along with a PBT, like buttefly girl stated if want it bad enough hard work will get you somewhere. hey butterfly girl, did the spots you were talking about look like pimples? without the white tips?

Yep! He is in my FOWLR which has pretty dim lighting so you really have to look hard to see them. Besides the spots he is eating well and behaving normal. This fish has went through Hypo, 3-Formalin dips, a couple different antibiotics and a 24 hour dose of the dreaded 'Fluke Tabs' in the 6 months in qt:rolleyes: The Hypo killed the ich he had when I first got him but soon after raising the salinity he broke out in this strange blotchy rash:confused: Looked like someone painted polka dots on him!..Finally got him cured of that after the antibiotics and Formalin dips [and his near death experience] After that he would get the pimple like bumps off and on..I kept the qt pristine..changing water at least every other day [every day if medicating] did a couple more dips and tried the Fluke Tabs. [bad stuff] He was clean for 3 weeks when I placed him in my 240 and within 24 hours those darn spots returned:mad: .. All other fish in the main are healthy and were all quarantined.. So I threw up my hands and decided as long as he is acting healthy, he is staying in the main!! If he could live with the 'blemishes' so can I;)
Could even be a mild case of Lymphocystis...Reading through Noga's disease book, I could diagnose him with several different conditions:confused: Too many conditions cause white spots or cyst

Man....I am rambling today:lol:

Hmm, I could say that at times, they are roughly equal in terms of hardiness, but powder blue tangs are usually more difficult. This is also made worse by the fact that powder blues are so aggressive, thus stressing themselves and other fish.
