Seahorses really are not rare, that is really not the reason why they are expensive. They cost a fair amount because they must be raised in captivity and very carefully to avoid pathogens That seahorses in general are very Susceptible to. A few years ago it was the norm to buy wild caught seahorses from the pet store and they were very difficult to raise Because they had a tendency to die from at that time somewhat unknown Sicknesses, Also wild caught seahorses would rarely eat anything but live food and that was very difficult for the average keeper of an aquarium to acquire in a quantity required to keep The seahorse alive. Almost all of the seahorses you see at the pet store today will have been tank raised seahorses or at least they should be, and any seahorse raised in a tank is much easier to keep. It really is not true anymore that seahorses are very difficult to keep alive in captivity, they have their specific requirements just like many other aquatic animals but if you can dedicate a tank to them and only include livestock in that tank that are compatible with seahorses they should live long happy lives. The cost of seahorses now is largely a reflection of how hard that particular kind of seahorse is to raise in captivity as some of them are difficult to Raise from a tiny baby seahorse to the size necessary to ship it to the pet store or a person with an aquarium.
