Unfortunately for you, those are parasite pyramid snails. They will suck the fluids out of the mantle of the snail and eventually kill it. The only way I have found to get rid of them is to take the host snails out of the water, and carefully rub off the pyramid snails with your finger.

If you keep removing snails and wiping them off, you can drastically reduce their numbers.

Best of luck,

Roy

According to Dr Ron, the parasite snails that go after snails, are different from the ones that go after the clams. Unfortunately, they basically look the same. Per Dr Ron, they eat what they hang out on.

Best of luck,

Roy

oh wow:eek2:
theres like a million in my tank you can see them better when the lights are off
about the wrasses what one would eat or kill them

wow, this sux, i been needing some more snails... ... could you let me know where u got them so i don't go get any as well? btw, hopefully there will be someone with a resolution and you can rid your tank of these basstards.

ive had these snails forever now they are not new ...... i just picked out hella of these freakin' things i checked the clam very closely and every snail then i just went through the tank picking out of the live rock:mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2: :mad2:

man, after i saw this thread i was looking at my tank and i have a few of these suckers, too. i saw one or two on a couple snails... not nearly as many as that pic, but still... grr, very frustrating. not sure what they came in on, my snails have also been with me for quite a while. or perhaps i just never noticed these before? :\ yikes.

In the tank I have them, they came from a cup of live sand from a fellow reefer.

I think if you keep watching and cleaning your snails, you can really knock the population down. The most I ever saw on one snail was over a hundred of them.

Best of luck,

Roy

One big problem with using a diurnal fish with nocturnal snails is well when one is awake and moving, the other is hiding for the most part :(

well its the second day and noticed a total difference on the population after the first round of picking and now tonight i just got done picking out a bunch of them....hope that helps....i guess i won't be needing a wrasse after all

To get rid of them on clams I just placed the clams on eggcrate or a PVC coupling. Every day, I would remove each clam and scarpe down the entire shell with a toothbrush and run it under a stream of tap water. Obviously you don't want to expose the clam's mantle to tap water, so be careful. It's important you do it every day to get eggs, the tiny ones you don't see, etc., and to do it to every clam. After about 2 weeks I stopped, and they never came back. I never had an issue with them going after snails.
