ok i bought a cinnamon clown at a store on monday. they had two but in two different tanks. i bought one and read don't buy another large one because they weill both be female and fight.

well wednesday i happened across a smaller one at a different store but it had no white stripe but same colourings so i figured it was a variation of the same species.

they are both in my 55 intreoduced 2 days apart. getting along great no scars nipped fins or chasing. they both have seperate hang out spots but cross paths every so often

how do i determine if they are a pair or if i lucked out with friendly clowns?

Top one looks like melanopus and the bottom is ephipium.

I think the common name for the top one is cinnamon and the bottom is fire clown.

crap. those names are used interchangebly on sites. i got confused.

here is a better pic of the "white stripe one"

what do you think will happen between the two of them? they are obviously closely related...do you think they will be fine?

Anytyhing could happen. If you like the fish keep them. What are your goals? Like species are really more likely to pair up and spawn. If you just want 2 nice looking fish you are in a good spot.

That is really a beautiful cinnamon clown (A. melanopus). I think Morgman on this site had a cinnamon x fire clown pair that produced babies for him. Only time will tell. 2 days is too early to tell if they will tolerate each other or not.

yea i know what you mean about being too early.

i have been reading online that you can not keep different species of clowns in the same aquarium unless it is over 100 gallons and they are less aggressive.

my original goal was to have a nice pair but now seeing as they are different species my goal is to have them if not pair up....then at the very least coexsist peacefully

sometimes they nudge each other. not bite but just bump their head gently into each other. weird stuff.

also can anyone recommend tankmates?

i know these are more aggressive clowns. they are in with a clean up crew and one molly which they are nipping.

i know a 55g isnt that large but at the very least can i toss in a coral beauty and royal gramma maybe a blue damsel????

My melanopus are getting really friendly the last few weeks but they sure are small. I've had them about 4 months.

I'd stay away from the damsels, they are pretty closely related. I am not really enamored with coral beauties. The one I have is harrassing my clarkii. I don't really know anything about grammas. I have a mandarin (eating arcti-pods) in with my melanopus. My other pair of clarkii are alone and quite happy.
