artemia de-cap question

I'm using the same eggs (stored in the freezer) that I used just a few weeks ago with no prolem.

Don't freeze the cysts, as this will probably activate diapause (sleeping time) again, or at least terminate the quiescent stage, i.e. cysts waiting for the best condition to hatch. If frozen you must acclimate at room temp for 1 week before decap/hatching in order to restore viability. Weigh small packages in quantities you use during the week, store them in freeze in your 1lbs. can, and take one out each week ahead of usage.

I keep non-decapsulated cysts in the freezer. It was recommended to me by Florida Aqua Farms for long term storage. Actually I purchase a coffee can size of cysts, divide the cysts into smaller containers (about 10 containers) and freeze them. I take one out every few weeks, then decapsulate. I dont freeze de-capsulated cysts only.

I have never put cycts in the freezer, never even heard of that. I keep them in the fridge but I don't buy the one pound lots as I have had some that I thought were "bad" in the past. I think the jars I get are maybe 8 oz's? I get the SF Bay strain from BrineShrimpDirect. Is freezing a good idea??

I also was freezing them based on instructions from Florida Aquafarms. I've taken mine out of the freezer and will try again in a few days. Thanks for the tip. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if that's the problem because, up until now, the processing I was using was working without fail.

We always froze our cysts at the fish hatchery I worked at. Never had problems. I think it's pretty common in aquaculture to freeze the cans you get since you usually get them in bulk. We would go through 2-4 cans or bags per decap depending on the number of larvae we had.

I buy decapped eggs from seahorsesource.com. I may cost more but there are lots of advantages:

1) wife don't complain about the mess
2) wife don't complain about my spending time on it
3) wife don't complain about room taken up in the fridge.

List goes on. Life became easier when I swithed.

Good luck, Kevin

Ed,yeah that boy looked too young :)
Joe L. said you were close to our age.
Suerte con la causa!:)

No, that boy looks older than our dear Edgar.

I met both Joe and Edgar this past weekend at IMAC, and although Edgar says he has 30 years hobby experience, he cannot be older than 25!

I spent a wonderful afternoon with Edgar, Joe L., Dman, and Fishboy at Joe's amazing clownfish basement. Overwhelming! But I digress.
