ASM G3 vs Octopus NW200?

Hey guys....
Currently on my 180.....I have an ASM G3. Would an Octopus NW 200 give any significant performance increase over the G3?

Thanks, Jim

skimmers

skimmers

I had both and believe me,the octopuss is better than the g3 in stock form or modified.
and it's like $100 less.
I ended up making them both recirculating and meshmodded.
I wouldn;t put a g3 on anything more than 75 gallons.(my opinion) but the octopuss I ended up running on a 240 and it pulled awesome.
I wish I didn't sell it!!
on your 180 though I would say neither are good enough for a reef that size but if the octopus is mesh modded and do the recirculating mod it will be plenty of skimmer for you.

The reason I ask is that when the tank was bought....the G3 was included in the package deal. There is a guy here locally selling an Octo NW 200 for $120 (if it is still available). I was just wondering if the NW200 would give me the extra performance to justify the $120 cost of upgrading to it. Or.....should I just mesh mod the G3 for now, save the $120, and buy a bigger skimmer down the road? Currently the tank isn't really stocked too heavy. It has a yellow tang, blue tang, a lawnmower blenny, a couple of clowns, a firefish goby, a green chromis, and a mandarin. As far as corals go...it has mostly softies in the way of a fiji leather, some mushrooms, and zoos with some LPS in the form of frogspawn, hammer, and a torch coral. It does have a montipora, a birdsnest, and a couple of stylophoras.

Thanks for the reply.

I have an octopus NW 200. I did a very simple recirculating mod, to make it even more efficient, as well as a mesh mod, and a gate valve mod. The skimmer is pretty much a beast now =).

lol.. didn't realize who posted above your last post... the man i got my skimmer from, Jrmx635!

I can attest to what he is saying for sure though, the octopus is a great skimmer, beats out my buddies ASM, that's for sure.

The Octopus units are good skimmers, but without mods there is not much of an improvement over the ASM g3. Now the octopus is made a lot better out of better material. But I would not classify that change as an upgrade, just a replacement.

so how do you do the mods

This is what I would do if I were you.
I had an ASMG1X and moved to an Octopus DNW 200. Large recirc unit. I modded the venturi inlet and made a huge difference. I also added a feed pump with pinwheel in it to add more bubbles! But guess what, as always, we try to save money in this hobby but always end up spending more because the cheaper item we bought previously just doesn't do the job.

And I am in that predicament at the moment. My existing tank is only 134 gallons but have difficulty with nutrient export. I have, so far, bought five skimmers!

Check out saltwaterconnection.com and see their new octopus pro models. These are very decent skimmers for the money.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. What makes the Octo better? Is it more the pump or the fact that it is an 8" diameter skimmer vs the 6.5" diameter body on the G3 (even though it is 3" taller)?

Jim

If you are looking at the pump the ASM is better. They use Sedra with pinwheel. Which in my opinion is better than the needlewheel that the old Octo uses.
The ASM is a Euroreef knock off.

Mike....
Given that the pump on the G3 is better.....why does the Octo outperform the G3? Is the design that much better than the G3?

Thanks, Jim

g3 vs octo

g3 vs octo

The octopus pump is more flow/air.
the sedra 5000 is a 500gph pump and the octo 3500 is around 700gph.
More flow/higher turnover, more air, also the octopus is a bigger body for good contact time.
the biggest problem on the g3 seems to be that the neck is not sized right for the amount of air.
I have had over a dozen skimmers and (no offense)the g3 was probably the worst one I owned especially for the money I spent on it.
It worked but not without modifying the intake, mesh and recirc.
that neck needs more air to work right.
for the money an octopus is bigger, you get more water flow, more air and when modified this thing is right up there with $4-500 skimmers in performance.
also the pumps are cheaper and the impellers are easier to mesh.
you don't have to ruin(sedra's you have to cut off the pins) the impeller because the blades can pop off and be glued back on.
If I could set up another octo on my 240 i would in a heartbeat to save on electric and initial cost.

Get yourself a good skimmer. Use your money to buy an overrated skimmer for your large tank and be done with it.

Like I said I have a DNW200 that is somewhat modded and it's still not good enough for my lightly stocked 135 gal tank.

Mike,

The NW 200 is larger than the G3, it was somebody else in the thread that was talking about there NW-150.

I'm not sure why the DNW200 is not keeping up with your 135. I have a meshmoded NW200 on my 180 and it fills the cup up every 2 days.

For $120 you should grab the skimmer and then you could either sell it or the ASM for more and pocket $50 or so in the process.

O well....the decision was made for me. I was second in line for the skimmer and the guy ahead of me paid. Just my luck. I do appreciate all of the thoughts and opinions guys.
