Do they only skim wet? No matter what I do I cant get mine to get a nice foam like shaving cream. Its more like bigger wet bubbles, not the froth shaving cream like im used to.

I've only had mine (BM200) a few months, but yes, it seems to only skim wet. The outlet is all the way open and it's in about 9" of water.

But I love it skimming wet. Overall, a very consistent skimmer.

The only thing Im not happy with is how long it takes to recover from hands in tank or virtually any changes made. Other than that, its running flawlessly.

This skimmer will not collect the thick crud in the collection cup. The thick crud is collected at the inner cup tube, under the lid, and at the upper outer edge of the inner collection cup tube(dependant on where the foamhead breaks). With this thick crud I also get the dark brown liquid skimmate that is in the collection cup. I have my BM200 in 9" of water with the output submerged and the gatevalve midway open(adj. so the foamhead breaks 1" below inner cup tube. I also restricted the intake air so I get nice dense tiny bubbles all the way to the foam head. I have the 1st generation BM200.

Yes, hands in tank are the death knell for the foam. But it recovers within a few hours, and seems to make up for the downtime pretty quickly.

What model do you have, how long have you had it, and how many inches is it in?

I also have 1st gen BM200 and the gate valve is broken in the fully open position. I agree that most of the solid crud collects on the cap and upper inside edge of the riser tube.

Did you restrict the intake with an airline valve?

I dont know what gen it is? How can I tell? Also the skimmer is in 7in of water as stated by the manual. I got the skimmer a few days ago, and its not finished breaking in. I have the gate valve at 1/2 way open or closed however you look at it and there is no foam rising up the neck when I do this. In order to get foam to collect I need to almost close off the gate valve.
