I would go with the autotopoff.com setup with an aqualifter. It is still going to come in over 50 but if she is opposed to using a floatvalve that is going to be the cheapest way.

On a real budget you can use a small bottle of water and let it gravity feed into the tank. Similar to how a water cooler works. Water can't enter the tank until air can enter the top off jug from underneath. Simple and foolproof. If your tank is wavy it doesn't work quite as well but still decent. Joey the king of diy on YouTube does one as well. This only works on small tanks however.
