im going to be purchasing an ATO soon. my questions is this. should i use my apex with a break out box. or should i go with a separate method like the jbj?

with all the things my APEX already does im getting nervous about having all my eggs in one basket. so to speak.

any opinions?

Frankly I used my Apex for this feature.

I understand what you mean about all your eggs in one basket.

If I loose my smart phone I will be lost... but I do have it backedup in google.

At least with the apex you can monitor it in one spot and check it from the office etc...

Just make sure there is padding around it so they do not fall out of your baskets.

Plus... imagine going on vacation.. how many items do you have to show the person that is going to watch your tank for you. (or your significant / insignificant other)

I use a reef genesis storm to be my ATO, then I use my apex to make sure to email me. With the reef genesis I am able to put on the Renee portion to have always water change and the storm also helps me monitor ATO reservoir for low water to turn on my ro/di unit.

I could easily argue both sides of this one but I am running my ATO as stand alone simply because I like the Tunze 3155 so much and it's rock solid. Also I can take my controller off-line (haven't ever needed to but I COULD lol) and not affect the ATO functions of the system.

I'll second this the tunze osmolator is rock solid and it is nice having the double sensors built right in for a bit of extra redundancy. Its a bit on the expensive side but well built and keeps you from having all your eggs in a single basket.

I use my Apex with BB and two float sensors. One for high and one for low. You can always add a second high sensor. It's unlikely both will fail. However my ATO only holds 4 gal for a 50gal net system. If it were to dump the whole thing in (when filled) it would be terrible.
