Attention Regal Angel Owners!!

I'm looking into adding a regal angel into my 260 full of soft corals. I'm looking for first hand experience from owners who have this fish and their experiences (good or bad) with this species.

Well the primary concern is finding a regal that will eat. Then IMO the secondary concern is what damage it does to your reef. My current regal seems to be very, very reef safe. My last one decimated zoos.

I have had my red sea regal angel for about 3 years. He eats spectrum, formula I, II, and mysis. He also loves red nori, but won't touch green nori.

I think the trick is to get one that is eating and healthy and wait until they are established in the tank and eating before adding any agressive tankmates that might bully him.

By the way, mine is from the red sea, and i got it at the marine center. (paid a little more, but it came in really health and eating on the first day)

hth

edit: he left my zoos alone for about 3 months, and then he destroyed them all. i also suspect he destroyed my acans, but i can't prove it. he leaves my riccordia and sps alone.

Before I put mine in my reeftank, I had him in my refugium for over a month. During this time I introduced him to several kinds of foods to make sure he was eating the right things and switched a few different types of corals in and out to make sure he wasn't eating the wrong things. Seems to have worked. So far, he's a model citizen.

I'd reccomend reading the Regal angel thread here on the boards. I did before I got mine. I've had mine for only 2 weeks but in those 2 weeks, it has become one awesome fish. Getting one to eat is the key. Mine is the Red Sea variety and I got it from Live Aquaria. At the recomendation of a person here who has 3 in his reef, I used raw clams to entice the regal to eat. It really seemed to like the clams. After that, it eats just about anything. It has snacked on xenia a little, something I really don't mind.

I don't have any other soft corals in the tank. However, I do have a group of gonioporas that it hasn't touched. Some people suggest that maybe these fish turn to snacking on corals if they are not fed enough. I just think, like any other angel, it is hit or miss.

it not even getting him to eat but getting them to eat and being able to provide the right diet. plenty of people will have a "feeding" regal that just dies out of nowhere.

the other thing, imo, is to get one that is small. i got my indo/pac regal a year ago @ about 2.5-3". he is now 4-5".

as far as reef safe there is no definitive answer until you put one in your tank. ive seen them tear tanks apart and ive seen them be model citizens (mines in between). i personally believe that the smaller you get them, the safer they will be but that is more from personal experience than anything ive read.

Got my red sea about a year ago at 2". Now at about 4".

Went through a clam picking, zoa eating, lps decimating phase for about a week. Upped the feedings and made it a little more diverse and she straightened up.

Had an indo that was difficult to get eating, he slowly transitioned but never get him out of the coral/clam eating.

Just worry about getting them to eat period.

Yes, PLEASE read the Regal Angel Thread. The responses to this post are full of people who have had success. This is very far from the norm. Most regal angels die within several months of purchase.

I've had a Red Sea Regal now for about 4 months. Very difficult to get eating, but now is doing well. I was lucky as this was my first attept at a Regal. Remember it is better to pay for the quality up front on this fish. Also, I have SPS and soft corals in my tank and my Regal doesn't bother either.

I'll make it easy for yaââ"šÂ¬Ã‚¦.

Read all this and all your questions will be answered.

There is so much information, the Regal Angel thread is actually two threads. After reading it all you'll come to the conclusion that most Regals are very individualistic.

For the record, I have a Indo-Pacific Regal, going on 8 months. Didn't touch my zoos or shrooms. Showed a little interest in a leather coral (more browsing rather that eating I suspect). Spent a lot of time eating a red ball sponge and eats macro algae like it's his last meal. On commercial foods, he's very picky. Mainly just goes for ON Formula II, but will eat the Angel Formula. Won't eat much else. If I put a clam in on the half shell he'll pick it clean in a few hours. Mine's a fantastic fish, but also a bully sometimes.

I have found that the ones from HI/MI will eat pretty easily and are not shy. They are not as pretty as Red Sea, but any regal that eats and is not shy is a nice regal to me.
