I did manage to buy the aquacultured frag today of the true echinata on DD though.

interesting that people are saying it doesn't like a lot of light.
This is the same aussie echinata I posted earlier. It's in the brightest spot in the tank under a 250w ushio 14k in a lumen max elite.

Funny thing is I got another piece in, at first it (good 3 months and doing well) was in about 20 inches away from the light (400w 20k xm bulb with 4x 80w t5), then I moved it up closer to the light (6 to 8 inches up). Guess what, it killed again. Tell me if I m doing something wrong@!

we call the bottom one midnight blue.....i have a large colony of this 10inch

Here is a little beaut from the LFS. It was an Aussie shipment of corals. this started as a tan base with yellow tip table colony origionally. Looked like a Karl's candelight. Don't know for sure what type of acro it is, but it turned into a grafted purple candelight.:eek2:

You can see the swirls of yellow green in the base on the branches. The LFS lost their colony, but I know of couple other reefers in Michigan that were able to get a piece..

Like you I think the two look very distinct from each other. I am more inclined to say that the first is more characteristic of echinata. Both beautiful and valuable gems but appear different. Nice shooting BTW.

Now that said, I grew several Ice Fires into decent sized colonies starting from frags. Some of the colonies took on different growth patterns and shapes. Unfortunately I don't have them anymore to compare live to the Aussie echinata. While its possible that different conditions could produce different looking growth patterns, the differences in this case would seem pretty extreme.

Maybe the end result of all of this is that people will now have to seek out both the true echinatas and true speciosas to have a truly complete collection LOL :spin1:

Well its been a while but some on this thread may recall the conversation about Echinata vs Speciosa and my assertion that most corals (including Ice Fire) that had been labeled "Echinatas" were, in fact, Speciosas.

Today I saw LA post the below acro as Speciosa! Nice to see a vendor stepping up to the plate and calling a coral what it is despite the fact the "echinata" title would probably help it sell quicker!

I would like a lot that the vendor, here in Brazil, acted in the same way. We know that it's difficult the identification of SPS.

I have seen these are now coming in to the US. I have also heard they are not Aussie, but out of Papua New Guinea. Anyone know where these are collected?

My favorite LFS hass been getting is shipments of some really nice Aussie SPS and LSP. This one was one of them. I want a frag so bad. I saw a frag of it there yesterday ask jumped all over it then they said sorry sold already :angryfire: so was the ponape birds nest frag :angryfire: skunked twice. So I got a nice clam. The Aussie sps are crazy cool colors, I love them.
