Hey guys, so I just bought this coral and its my first SPS coral that I have anything to do with besides my pagoda which from my understanding is on the border of LPS and SPS. What do you guys think about this Pectinia, the store said it was very rare and a nice piece. They just got it from an Australian shipment. I know I read somewhere about mixing the SPS and softies but not sure why exactly. I'm super excited about this piece, any tips and also how much it is worth would be very helpful. I payed $100 but I was in love with it at the store. Nice bright green!

nice piece…
hard to tell in the photo how green it is.
i have to tell you that it doesn't look particularly rare and i also have to say the i personally think that $100 is on the high side of normal for a piece like that.. but aussie corals always seem to demand a higher price, wether or not it is warranted.
personally, i'd classify a pectinia as an lps..
they are not light demanding at all nor are they particularly demanding of pristine water quality but like any coral, it will thrive under good light, good water quality and proper parameters..
enjoy it!

Thanks, I saw one that was all brown for $100 at another store and it was from Indonesia, last time I saw it they had moved it to their display case and weren't selling it anymore. To me it was worth it, that's all that matters. Sorry about the pic, it had only been in my tank for 30 minutes and its probably not acclimated and my cell phone doesn't take great pics. Ill try to get a better one.

Also what is the name for this specific pectinia, I have seen it called ultra, tricolored rainbow, and lime dazzle. They all look the same. Could it be the orgin? This one is definitely from Australia.

Nice. Pecinia should be considered an LPS and I think most would agree.

I imagine it will only get more colourful. They like to be fed lots. I have seen very similar pectinia come from other places besides Aussie and have seen them go for $60-$80. $100 for an aussie seems around the right price but personally I wouldn't pay more than that for it. Of course it all depends on what is available to you and your LFS. Either way its a nice one, enjoy.

Pectinia alicornis is the scientific name. "Rainbow" usually just means 3+ or 4+ colors on a single colony or polyp. "Ultra" is just a marketing term that's less clearly defined, but usually translates roughly to "More color than average". More specific names are kinda tough. They are usually "supposed" to refer to a single line of corals, meaning the parent colony and its clones, or those that are identical in appearance.
