Auto top off

I'm two weeks into my cycle and have to top off about 2/3rd of a gallon every day. When I top off should I use Ro or salt water? If I use Ro won't that bring the salinity down with so much water being chased?

Salt does not evaporate... with that said only top off with RO.... For water changes use salt water.

Ro water. The salt in the evaporated water does not leave your tank. Had u not top off with water, salinity would have risen due to evaporation.

So with that much evaporation salinity won't change? I'm worried that before I top off salinity will be one number say 1.031 and then adding the water brings it down to say 1.027 and my livestock won't be able to handle it.

Is the best thing to do is get an auto top off unit?

I currently do not have an auto top off.

As water evaporates the salinity rises. When you add RO water salinity drops. I add 1/2 a gallon per day of RO water. By doing this I keep my salinity between 1.024 and 1.025, If I slack a day it will rise to 1.026. I have an easy to see fluctuation because my system is so small.

Over time and during the cycle is the best time to figure these fluctuations out (before you have said livestock). Make a mark of the HIGH level on your tank at 1.026 and allow it to evaporate till it hits a LOW at 1.024. At this point you will know where you need to add water and how much to add. I hope this helps.

I definitely recommend eventually getting a Tunze auto top off. It is more expensive than JBJ or other cheap brands but it is great quality and keeps your salinity from dropping drastically when you pour the water in.

Either that or get used to the idea of topping off twice a day, 1/3 in the AM and 1/3 in the evening to help maintain stability.
You did not say how large or small the system is, 2/3 of a gallon may or may not have a significant impact on salinity dependant on the size of the system.

I agree ^^^. Also when you level off, draw a line so you will know where to stop at as you are topping off with RO water.
