auto top off

I have a float valve attached to a rubbermaid garbage can to make new RO/DI whenever the level falls, like making new water. I have a pump in the bottom of that rubbermaid that pumps water into the sump whenever I fall below the float level in the sump. The problem is, that sometimes the water keeps flowing even after the pump shuts off due to suction perhaps. How do you guys accomplish auto-top off?
