In the wild they are, but they are somewhat plentiful in the hobby. I can easily get about 10 colors/patterns of axolotl in my state, but it comes down to knowing who can get them.

OP, I would ask a reputable LFS who deals in freshwater to get some for you. If you have a specific coloration you are looking for, make sure to specify.

I saw one at a LFS about a year ago. Your LFS should be able to order you one. They are being captive bred.
