Back in the game

I had to break down my reef tank about 10 years ago and am finally in a place to start again. Quarantine tank set up this weekend and main tank later this fall once some house remodeling is finished. Excited to reconnect here.

I am excited to learn all about the new technology. Especially in lighting. That tank I posted the photo of had 1200 W of metal halides plus VHO F. I hear you don’t need stuff like that anymore…. My electricity bill is thankful.

lol, just this weekend, I took my MH fixture off my tank and replaced it with LED.

I am starting a very basic 29 gal with minimal filtration. Going with live sand and rock from Tampa bay. Plan it to mix water for a few days while I wait for delivery. Add sand and rock along with some dried rock, then the water. Was thinking since I have 6-8 mo before new tank I should pick one fish to keep this whole process/Quarantine system running. Will monitor cycle. What would you choose as your 29 gal host for I hope decades?

I’d go for a Pseudochromis or Dottyback/Basslet but, those are some of my favorite fish.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Look forward to getting info on new lighting and plumbing technology. Leaning towards a Desjardini Sailfin as my permanent resident. Have always loved them and should offer enough bio load on its own to really get the quarantine off and running. Plan for regular water changes and will let the live rock and sand sit for a week or two with a few pinches of pellet food to help the cycle. Can upgrade the filtration some if necessary but I think as a tank matures it becomes accustomed to certain Ammonia output as long as it's not over the top. Seem crazy?

If I see any signs of aggression when I'm ready to add a new fish will plan it to also be the first in the big tank. Planning for around 250 gal main so should be plenty for it to find space. Was thinking a few blue Chromis down the road for the first aggression test. Multiple peaceful fish and only in for 2 weeks. After that if all goes well a mandarin, antheas etc and then switch for another more (Potentially) territorial fish.
