Hi , im Rachael and I just registered with this forum in hopes to find some Upstater's. I live in Virginia beach and im moving back to binghamton in a month or so, here in VA you can go to any shop and buy your salt water or RO/DI by the gallon very cheap and so I do. I am worried that I cannot bring my reef tank home with me because I dont know of any shops near binghamton that sell atleast RO , Id be willing to try mixing the salt myself but dont want to use my well water obviously. Any advice or info on shops I may not know of would be great. The local shop here is only offering 600.00for my setup .... which has cost me atleast 2500.00 just in eqipment and livestock. I dont want to sell anyway , I really love the hobby . and have grown attached to all my fish ..ive had the same ones for over a year now. I know I could buy an RO/DI unit , and in the future I would , but im in the middle of a move during the holidays , I dont have a few hundred to throw at it right now.

OK, first off - you move FROM Binghamton TO VA Beach.

I just get my water from Wies (used to be Giant) - they have self serv RO/UV machines there - PITA to start a whole tank, but it is how I filled my 75. $0.33 if you use your own jugs.
I have ~12 gal jugs and one 5 gal jug you can borrow once your up here to help out if you like as I am in Endicott

DO they have them at all the locations (front street, binghamton?) That would be awesome . I planned on bringing enough mixed salt water with me to fill back up , so really I just need water changes and top off. which for me is about 8 gals a week total. I would have never thought of that in a million years. Now I will just have to figure out exactly how to do the salt water myself , the water in my tank has always been perfect so this should be fun .... :> THANKS FOR REPLYING !

Hey... welcome back. Yes the Front St one has them too.

Welcome back to the area. Mixing salt is easy. Just make sure you use a refractometer for reading salinity not a swing arm. They are notorious for not reading right. If a swing arm is all you can afford right now there are many here I'm sure could calibrate one if need be against there refractometer to be sure it reads right including myself. Good luck with the move.

Thanks to everyone for replys! I really appreciate it . Im surprised that there are so manny reefers in the southern tier since there isnt as much available in the area ...down here I bought everything that I have at one single shop , its been great to have such a wide variety of coral , fish and inverts. But my tank is fully stocked so really I just have to be able to maintain it. As far as refractometer , Ill check and see if my shop has got one thats used ...if not then ill get one . Thats cheaper than an RO/DI unit! lol, Now that I know im bringing it home...it will be fun figuring out how to get it all there safely !

Yep thinking about putting up another one and making it a FOWLR. That will be for the non reef safe fish that I can't keep in my my reef tank now:thumbsup: I just bought a used 30L so I may just stick with that for now. Decisions decisions lol.

Cool to know there are some reefers so close to home, when I get home that is. Even though the hobby is booming here ( There are literally a dozen reef specialty shops here) I have yet to meet more than one "friend" .

Rachel,
Out of curiosity which shop have you been working with? I used to be salt water mgr. for Pets N things in Norfolk up on tidewater drive. I worked for Animal House as well..
I know there were a couple that were just kind of getting going back then ...it was the very beginnning of the reef systems...
