Bad Check Valve

What make a swing check valve go bad? It has been in use for about 4 years and all of the sudden it doesn't work.

I've had them fail on me alot. I believe the salt either corrodes or builds up on the hinges, or on the edge of the flapper so it cannot close all the way.

Can they be cleaned or does it need to be replaced?

if it corroded the hing then its best just to buy a new one. try blasting some fresh water through to see if it comes loose, if not i wouldnt even bother trying to fix it.
