Bad experience with Aquatica

In Memoriam
I went to visit Aquatica in Tinley Park today for the first time, also my last. What I found was, several sick fish mixed in with healthy looking fish. There was a very limited selection of corals. What got my attention the most was 7 dying bulb tip anemones crammed into a tiny tank attached to the side of the tank or one piece of PVC, with two maroon clowns hosting. Some of them had short stubby tentacles with opened or puckered mouths; others were already in the melting stage. The price was $49.99. There was nothing striking about their color, and IMO the price would have been too high for a healthy one. I’ve paid $45 for a beautiful, healthy RBTA, and don’t regret it.

I asked the first salesman how long they have had them and what they were feeding them; he said they have had them a week and they were fed mysis shrimp. I said do you know that they are sick, he asked why, so I explained to him why. He also said that sometimes they will split, I said yes because they were under stress. Then he said they are really hard to keep. I said no they are not, I’ve kept several. He then stated that he knew they were sick.

Due to the fact that anemones are very dear to me, and the site of them sickened me, I thought about it for a while, and decided I would make them an offer. I figured I could save 3 to 4 out of the 7 with a lot of work, but was willing to put the effort into all of them. I have done a lot of research on them and felt confident in giving it a try. I was not shopping for anemones, and really didn’t want to buy any more.

So then I was approached by the second salesman, I asked what they would take for the anemones. He answered $49.99 each. I said I won’t pay that, and that these are dying. His reply was “yes I know.” I offered $10 each his reply to that, “I’d rather watch them die.” I asked him what they paid for each, he said $22. I said, how about $100 for all of them. He went to ask the owner that was behind the register and the owner agreed to sell two for $20 each. I said, no, I wouldn’t pay that much for them. I told the salesman, you just lost my $100, plus what you paid for them, and you will have 7 dead BTAs very soon, and he said, “I know.”

Not only was their price outrageous for a dying anemone, with the attitude “I’d rather watch them die” they don’t deserve to have livestock in there care.

Also, there was No guarantee on Livestock, no surprise there!

It's never a good idea to "rescue" anything. Then they see them as sellers & just buy/kill more. If they see them as $$$ loosers, they'll stop buying them.

Stuff like that really pis**s me off... :mad2:

Just as much as seeing 4 inch betas stuck into 4 inch fishbowls and set up like they were at a county fair for sale...

Thank you for bringing this to everyones attention...

That crosses another store off the list...

Pufferpunk: Couldn't help myself, but I know what you mean. They didn't get rescued anyway. Guess they enjoy watching them die.

Saltwater8: I agree with the beta, mine is in a nice 48 gallon tank, my son bought him for me for mothers day a year ago and expected me to keep it in a little bowl. He's loving life in the 48.

i have to defend Aquatica just a bit...these are good people here...maybe you were there on a bad day...we all have them....
ive been going there since they opened about 2yrs ago...Rob is a great guy and will help in any situatioin that you have, including keeping fish and corals if your tank takes a dump....

so dont cross a store off till you've been there.....granite, each experience is different for all of us.

to chat some more, ive been in stores where everything looks awesome...yet they charge 1000% more than what it should be....guess what....i wont go back there....so as explained, always give a LFS a 2nd chance....if your there twice with the same experience, then it time to scratch it off your list....each time is differnet.....

again thanks for sharing.

RK

It's honorable for you to defend the place, but from what redvipe2010 posted, it doesn't sound like it was just a "bad day".

And I, like most people, would rather pay a bit more for something they know was taken care of well rather than save a few bucks only to have it die or create havoc in your system.

Just my opinion...

(healthy fish)

I would not call anyone who says “I’d rather watch them die” good people. Rob may be a nice guy, but IMO, poor business man. Rob didn’t let his employee handle the register while he discussed the situation with me. If Rob knew what he was doing, or cared about his livestock he wouldn’t have 7 dying BTAs for the public to view, not to mention the sick fish. Nor would he have employees that have the “I’d rather watch them die attitude”. There are way too many LFS that have better customer service and healthy livestock. For example: Rod at Rod’s Reef, or Jim at Coral Paradise. There prices are also a lot better than at Aquatica.

If Rob can give such great advice if your tank takes a dump, why doesn’t he take care of his own first?

Aquatica will not be getting a second chance from me.

valid point there red....thanks sw8....some places are better than others.....

It's been quite sometime since ive been there...i hope this isnt what it has become...........

PS
i bring him corals for instore credit once in a while as well, those are the good looking ones you see...

Cheers.

The corals that I seen there looked ok, they just didn't have a large selection at the time. Not sure if they usually do or not.
