Bad Ich

Hi eveyone. Im new here. I have an elborate ich story and a few questions.

When I first set up my 29 gallon FOWLR tank, I had no idea about QT or any other prevention measures. Anyway, I had been loosing fish after fish after fish in my new tank (it WAS cycled) and it was time for the death to end. After a brute hurricane here in FL, Everyone in the tank died due to lack of power for 1.5 weeks. So, I used this oppourtunity to run the tank fallow and upgrade a few things. Being that I gained so much knowlege through reasearch throught all my ordeals, I learded from my mistakes and obatained valuble info. I upgraded to a Wet dry filter, from just a small HOT filter. I added a good protein skimmer. Purchased Chemi Pure, and a Phosphate reactor and absorber. Really souped up the tank. So after two months, I purchased two Percula Clownfish and A lemmonpeel angel fish. Everyone was happy, no disease, no agression no problems. (I should mention my LFS uses copper in their tanks and i left the fishes there for 14 days before picking them up.) So all was perfect. But beautiful things apparently dont last forever.

I Purchased a goby last month and put him right into my Display tank. All seemed fine and i think they would have stayed that way UNTIL.....(i have your attention dont i lol)

I added a royal gramma, Which until problems arose, i found out only had been in copper for 7 days.

Regardless, The gramma exploded with ich. Then, the worst. My gorgeous lemmon peel started developing it and the next day she died.

My Clownfish were still perkey and had no signs of any parasite at all. No change in behavior. Nothing. So, because they are the most important thing to me, i just removed them from the display and put them in a QT with no medication. All new water, identical parameters to display. I just didnt want them to be exposed to the parasite and eventually pick it up, because they dont have it as of now. So they are still fine.

But i cant catch the Gramma. Impossible. She is BAD coated with ich. I dont know how much longer she is going to hang in but she still eats and has somewhat usual behavior.

My Diamon Watchman Goby, is fine. I have heard he cant get ich. So i havent even worried about him since he is fine and shows no change in behavior.

So i really dont know what do do here.

1. Should i treat the clowns with copper? I dont like treating fish that arent sick since a previous pair of clowns died from copper (im pretty sure)

2. How can i catch the gramma?

3. Can the Goby stay in the tank while it runs fallow b/c it is apparently Ich "proof" or "resistant"

4. As the gramma gets worse, does the ich population become harder to defeat

5. once i get the gramma out, how long should i run the tank fallow, will eight weeks be enough?

Any other reccomendations would be TREMENDOUSLY APPRECIATED

Thank you SO MUCH!

Im currently battling my first ich outbreak right now so i may not be of mych help. my tank is FO so i chose to treat my ebtire tank with hyposalinity. if you have LR or invertibrates hypo will kill them.
i can give u these web pages so you can learn about the cycle and stuff

Hope this helps some Good Luck!!!

1. I would prefer doing a hyposalinity treatment in this case.

2. There are several threads here on RC that cover catching fish. This is one such thread:

3. Goby is not 'Ich proof.' Marine Ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) can be carried by the gobies and infect the gobies. Goby must be removed for treatment.

4. Actually the opposite. After about 10 months, without the introduction of new parasites the MI parasite will weaken to the point where it can't infect anymore. But, it's faster to get the fish out and let the tank go fallow for 2 months! :D

5. 8 weeks is my recommendation. See my response in this thread:

In general, avoid myths. Get the facts. This short article is good for many facts, although it has a couple of minor errors:

Last but not least, be sure of your diagnosis. MI usually doesn't kill very fast, BUT, Marine Velvet does kill quickly.

Good luck!
