i done some research about jobs and colleges since i am gonna be taking the ACT soon. I found out that if i got into marine biology i will end up either working for chad for the rest of my life, or i will become an unemployed :(

but on the bright side, i will get to go to college in florida and spend 2 years in the ocean on a real reef :D

anyone have any extera info??? on Marine Biology

o, and if i become a marine biologist, unless i marry some freakin rich woman i would not be able to keep a reef tank :(

--dissapointed (this is all based on the fact that i will be living after college.... ill let you know if plans change)

I have a freind that did the marine bio. He's stayed employed but has moved numerous different times to do it. Seems like it was always "a 4 year study" or a "3 year project". Also, he said he doesn't get to do much diving or "fun stuff", mostly water quality testing and paper work for him. My two cents sez keep lookin'. However, I would recommend you stay away from anything that requires much written communication as, well, your spellin' is kinda rough! (in Trottie-ease, "ruf") :)

OMG! That is my fav-o-rite Seinfeld episode!

Do an internship with Mote Marine in Sarasota FL. They usually end up hiring all of their interns. Sarasota is an awsome place to live.

One question....Is it about the money? If it is then worry about it. If not them as long as you can survive and do something you like to do then life is good.

I make some decent cash at my job....but I don't like it lol.

"Mammal."

"Whatever."

:p

I agree about Sarasota - very neat place.

Well Matt I was marine biology for some time in college. Changed to just biology, same difference basically.

From there you can actually do lots of things. Teaching being most of them, medicine being the other.

If you are looking for money, then go to business school and take some extra biology classes. You'll be happer in the long run.

If you want to spend time in the lab and time running out to reefs off the coast of Georgia/Flordia all the while having little to no extra money for trips, hobbies, etc, then biology is for you with a masters in marine biology. Though if you make it college professor level then your relationship with the bank won't be all that bad.

Remember, if you go in MB, you will be keeping lots of tanks the rest of your life.

U of I has good buisness options... i think.

the only thing that i will most likely never be is a Doctor. they get screwd at every corner (hours, off time calls, law suits and such)
-- some other medical feild may be in my future though. ENT? they make great dough and dont do a whole lot :D

Maybe Trottie can be Kramer when he grows up.... lucky with the ladies and always falls into money without trying ;) Maybe get a cushy job with Vandelay Industries...

Don't worry about it... most people change their major a couple of times during college. The best advise I can give is to try to get an internship in the field you want to work in... it'll give you a good idea of what you are actually getting into.

study computers. :)

I'd avoid computers like the plauge. seems like atleast half of the people graduating now have some type of computer/technology related degree. the market is saturated. you wouldnt believe how many resume's you have to sort thru when you post an opening. on top of that... any type of IT/IS department is always a liability to a company. meaning they dont tend to be money makers, only precieved as a drain. so IT tends to typically always be under heavy pressure to make cuts and save more more more..

then again thats just my experience with it. I love my job, but would probably have choosen something else if i knew how many people were going to choose jobs in this field.

eventually your department will be automated or the technology you support will be retired.. then what?

if you do pick I.T. stay flexable! and learn as much about everything you can.

It also seems to be one of the easiest jobs to outsource to India or China... If I have a problem with my computer in my office, I have to call our Help Desk, which gets me a tech in India with a thick accent, and who will take my problem, and then contact someone in my building to come help only if the problem can't be fixed remotely.

You probably mean EMT vs. Ear/nose/throat dr. If you get on with a fire dept then yes there are good benefits/pay/scheduling. My dad retired from Kirkwood F.D. My friend is an EMT for Abott and then the pay isn't that great. He gets about 10 @ hour give or take a buck but about 20 hours of overtime a week is available. 1/3 of the time they're parked and taking a nap. :D But for EMT you don't need to go to college just contact Abott and they'll put you through thier school in less than a year. The pay goes up another few bucks an hour if you continue the school and get your paramedic and that is about another year of school. If this sounds good for you look into taking the fireman classes through the comm. college and try to get on a fire dept. World of difference in the pay and benefits. Start lifting weights, you'll need it to get through the Fire Acadamy and it will come in handy carrying those 600 lb. people on a stretcher down 2 or 3 flights of steps. Also hang out on your roof getting used to heights and getting on/off a ladder.
