Bad Refug

The plant in my refug start to over grow and I didn't trim them back enough and as a resulted some the plants on the bottom starting to die off. Well last night I noticed a band of cloudy in the middle of the refug, which was the result from the plant matter dieing off. I took a turkey blaster and drew some water from that area and it smelled like a burning rubber tire. The water above that smell fine, which is what was flowing back into the tank. So I pulled out the dead plants and did a # of water changes in the refug area, taking out most of the water and cleaning off a couple of rocks which didn't smell at all. After each water change I filled the area back up and check to see if it still smell. Well after about 4 changes the smell seemed to be gone.

Funny but all my pods, mysis shrimp and fire worms in the refug were doing fine as was the tank. So hopefully I caught it early and nothing will happen to the tank and corals. I need to place a new poly pad and some chem pure in tonight just to be sure, I wish I did this morning but forgot.

Wierd, or maybe not. What kind of plant do you have. Maybe they went sexual or what ever they call it. do you use reverse daylighting or 24/7.

I think some of it was going asexual but I think part of the problem was it over grow and the stuff on the bottom didn't get enough light and start to decay. Either way not a good thing and hopefully everything is ok. I'll fine out when I get home tonight.
