bad times at bio-reef

How should someone acclimate their fish?

1. Float for 15 min.
2. Pour into net (it is considered bad practice to allow the ammonia rich water from the bag into the tank). However, if it is a large unwieldy fish you can drain the bag and carefully let the fish “slide out”.
3. If you have any aggressive fish it is usually a good idea to feed them first, turn out the lights, and rearrange your decorations. Obviously if you have a reef you will ignore the latter.

So this is the approved method of acclimation?
I always thought you needed to slowly mix the bag water with tank water to minimize shock.

Ammonia at low pH is bound (like in freshwater tanks) and unbound at high pH. Your fish's respiration in the bag lowers the pH, but when you add tank water you raise the pH in the bag which unbinds the ammonia. THis is really bad for a new fish. If you use this method you must use a product in conjunction that will eliminate the ammonia such as Amquel. BTW I am not a big fan of putting a net on the fish either, I prefer my hand.

Like you said Cades lets end this on a positive note I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t know about the ph and ammonia like Jeff I always done it to minimize shock on the fish

I thought that this would put more stress on the fish then the way I’ve done it but hay you live and you learn right….

So new question how does all the online places get away with that way of acclamation? (Not comparing you to them don’t want to start up something else :) )

I’m still researching more about acclamation so I’ll keep posting about that. I think that’s enough about the whole dez vs. bio-reef so lets end it chalk it up and close this thread

Dez

Maybe we could open a new thread on acclamation and how people do it , what has worked in the past, and what is the best scientific way of doing it.

Oh and one more thing I WASN’T BLASTING!!!!

I guess it's better if i don't say anything. I do believe customer service is important though. Why not enjoy your job if you have to be there anyways 8-10 hours a day. I think it's a great job to have, working around aquaria all day. Not the most stressful job out there for sure and i bet there is discounts to be had.

J.C. John, I thought I did a good job of getting my point across while being diplomatic at the same time. And you told me not to post anything! J.C.
I agree, this thread should be closed!

The only guarantee in this hobby is that something will go wrong and something will die wether it is a pump or live stock and the other guarantee is that we will spend a lot of money!! Just 2 cents.

I don't think the thread should be deleted.
The info in here regarding acclimation is useful.
Or I guess we could start a new thread and keep it on that topic.
