Bad Wrasse Luck

Hi, Everyone.

So in my tank I've tried three wrasses all types of Fairy Wrasses. Koi, Tonos, and some kind of Red one. I've had bad luck with all of them. The Koi jumped, so I put a top on the tank, the other two died just randomly, one after 8 months the other after 2. All three wrasses have gone through a QT process where I TTM, observe, feed medicated food, so I'm not sure it's disease related, also all other fish are fine.

So I guess I'm just unfortunate to experience mysterious wrasse deaths.

The question I have is this, going to keep trying! So I want to ask, what do you guys think the best kind of wrasse for a 55g is and which have you guys had the most success with? I have a minimal aquascape so plenty of swimming room and plenty of sand.

Thanks,
Joey

They are sensitive to parameters. Try these: all have some wiggle room. salinity 1.025; alk 8.3 dkh; calcium 420; magnesium 1350; nitrates low.

I grow SPS and can't run alk that high. I run alk around 6.5. Ca, Mg, are on point, nitrates are 3ppm.

Did you use PraziPro on them by any chance? It's hard on wrasses, it's much better if you only use it at 80% of the recommended dosage.

No I didn't. I feed Dr G's, Focus, Metroplex, and Kanaplex on a rotation but this most recent one I did TTM for 3 weeks and didn't give him any medication beacsue I thought of that.

Why do you feed antibotic containing food without any reason or symptoms? That is a good way of inducing liver and/or kidney failure in the long run. Prolonged exposure to kanamycin is known to cause kidney failure in humans and metronidazole is carcinogenic.

Also , where they super males? Supermales are old fish that are near the end of their natural lifespan. Only largest and the oldest females turn into males, and only the ones that were males for sometime become supermales. My LFS theorizes that super males are males that are close to death. Their attention turns completely to breeding (so the colors) and that is the reason why they mostly dont eat much and have sunken bellies. Similar to male salmon that turn bright red during salmon run, or old trees that have one last massive blossom in the spring and die the following winter. This is a way to spending all you remaining resources towards breeding before the end.

Hi..... everyone has good points....as for my opinion....I have 4 leopard wrasses, red coris, yellow coris, and a Solar fairy Wrasse. I have never QT or ttm any of my Wrasses....and I have had really good luck with them...for your size tank I would recommend a Solar fairy Wrasse, yellow Coris Wrasse, or even a flasher Wrasse would be ok in that size tank. I have no experience with a flasher though. Make sure they are eating at the store first too....but that shouldn't be a issue with the Wrasses I mentioned. It sounds like you have everything else covered. Oh yeah....and I have never bought a Wrasse sight unseen, and I make sure it has been at my LFS at least a week before I buy it. Hope that helps!
