So, let me start by saying...I'm not a noob. I've had multiple diseases including ICH, Velvet, Brook, etc.
So I bought some fish from the LFS. 11 total. 8 blue/green Chromis, 1 blue Damsel, and 2 clowns (occ's).
The fish looked flawless, and of course we know this means absolutely nothing. I get them home in QT and they all began eating immediately. They were all swimming around a not acting weird at all. No sign of anything.
The next day, 1 blue Chromis is dead on bottom of tank. I'm thinking, dang...that was fast. I visually inspect the fish and nothing. At this point I'm thinking we have ICH which that's masked with low level copper from the LFS tanks and it's not in the visible stage. I just about started to run therapeutic level of copper while I'm doing TTM. However, I opted not to run copper because the Chromis and other fish were very cheap, and I really wanted to identify this disease. I was kinda thinking that maybe he just didn't tolerate the acclimation or transfer.
The next day, 2 more Chromis are dead. 1 laying on bottom, and 1 stuck to powerhead. Now I'm sure we're either dealing with Brook or velvet, but still no symptoms.
The next day, I notice what appears to be 2 fish who have a long turd hanging (white string). In the past, this has ALWAYS been a positive ID for Brook. So I get the Formalin MS, and immediately do a 1 hr dip. 20 drops to 1 gallon. I began to notice that the blue Chromis had some discoloration patches. Never did I observe any white specs, any bown or reddish haze, or anything other visual sign. The only other thing that I begin to see was rapid respirations. Keep in mind that the clowns were never phased and the entire time all the fish never quit eating or acted like they wanted to hide or be near the waters surface.
I lost about 1 fish daily until all the Chromis are gone. I actually have 1 left and bought them last Saturday. Clowns doing great.
Now the big question??
What in the world killed these fish.
