So, let me start by saying...I'm not a noob. I've had multiple diseases including ICH, Velvet, Brook, etc.

So I bought some fish from the LFS. 11 total. 8 blue/green Chromis, 1 blue Damsel, and 2 clowns (occ's).

The fish looked flawless, and of course we know this means absolutely nothing. I get them home in QT and they all began eating immediately. They were all swimming around a not acting weird at all. No sign of anything.

The next day, 1 blue Chromis is dead on bottom of tank. I'm thinking, dang...that was fast. I visually inspect the fish and nothing. At this point I'm thinking we have ICH which that's masked with low level copper from the LFS tanks and it's not in the visible stage. I just about started to run therapeutic level of copper while I'm doing TTM. However, I opted not to run copper because the Chromis and other fish were very cheap, and I really wanted to identify this disease. I was kinda thinking that maybe he just didn't tolerate the acclimation or transfer.

The next day, 2 more Chromis are dead. 1 laying on bottom, and 1 stuck to powerhead. Now I'm sure we're either dealing with Brook or velvet, but still no symptoms.

The next day, I notice what appears to be 2 fish who have a long turd hanging (white string). In the past, this has ALWAYS been a positive ID for Brook. So I get the Formalin MS, and immediately do a 1 hr dip. 20 drops to 1 gallon. I began to notice that the blue Chromis had some discoloration patches. Never did I observe any white specs, any bown or reddish haze, or anything other visual sign. The only other thing that I begin to see was rapid respirations. Keep in mind that the clowns were never phased and the entire time all the fish never quit eating or acted like they wanted to hide or be near the waters surface.

I lost about 1 fish daily until all the Chromis are gone. I actually have 1 left and bought them last Saturday. Clowns doing great.

Now the big question??

What in the world killed these fish.

The fish was probably passing an intestinal worm. It could otherwise be a copepod. Neither of which are probably killing you fish. My guess is that they have ureonema marinum, a very common issue with green chromis. Clamped fins, epidermal erythema and or sores are common features.

I think I agree too. I just had Brook. Although it's a super Nasty asexual rapid killer, I'm not convinced it was Brook. Even having the white strings hanging. If it was Brook, it was combined with ureonema. I believe this because when I dip with formalin MS (1 hr dips 2-3x a day) for a couple days, and treat the tank with it, I gain the upper hand in a few days. If I remember correctly, it's 10 drops per 5 gallons to treat the tank.

One thing I want to note. I treated some fish that had Brook a few months ago, and forgot that I had them in the Formalin dip (20 drops per 1 gallon). They're only supposed to be dipped for 50 minutes I believe. I fell asleep in my lazy boy by the tanks. I woke up 5 hours later and found the four fish still alive! 2 clowns and 2 blue/green Chromis. So, I'm gonna start increasing my drip time from now on, or increase the strength. I think this will really spank the heck out of Brook. I'll keep you guys posted on my findings.

So anyway, I agree with the above. My thoughts at the time were some really resistant strain of Brook because the Formalin wasn't getting it done, but it always has in the past with no issue. Just takes a lot of dips over a few days and keeping the tank treated. Also, Formalin will cloud your water. When I do water changes, I transfer the fish to another sterile tank. This helps with the Brook, and can also be affective with ICH. I do try to transfer on the 72 time frame though. If I need to change the water earlier, I'll still do the transfer at the proper time, 3rd day or 72 hrs.

Ureonema, what's the best way to nail it's butt? I need to brush up on research.

Clowns were never phased by ureonema. Only the Chromis and damsel. At least 1 died daily. 1 hour formalin dips and treated tank didn't touch it.

If anybody else gets it, I would dip longer than 1 hr. Plus increase strength in treated tank.
